Speaking at the Jito Connect 2025 event, Suryakumar reflected his journey, his learning from Dhoni and Kohli and Rohit making unique captains.

Suryakumar Yadav regrets: Never play under Dhoni

After starting his India in 2021 – four years after Dhoni left as captain – Suryakumar admitted that he always wanted to represent India under Captain Cool.

Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020, leaving behind a legacy, which inspires the generations of cricketers.

“I always wanted to get an opportunity when he was the captain of India, but I never got,” Suryakumar said. “Whenever I played against him in the IPL, I looked at him behind the stump. One thing I learned to him was to remain calm in the pressure situations. He never panicked, he would inspect the game and then decide.”

The fiery batsman, who has faced Dhoni several times in the IPL, described the former skipper’s performance as “unwanted composition”, saying that he tries to follow Dhoni’s peace under his captaincy.

While reflecting his early international days, Suryakumar credited – under whose leadership he started his India – to push the players to go beyond his comfort areas.

“Virat Bhai is a very difficult taskmaster. He pursues your boundaries and wants the best from all,” Suryakumar said. “He brings unmatched energy to both on the field and outside. You can feel his intensity every time to lead the team.”

According to Suryakumar, Kohli’s emotional leadership style made each player accountable and inspired to perform under pressure. The current T20I captain said that Kohli’s commitment to fitness and aggression set new benches for professionalism in Indian cricket.

Being played on a large scale Rohit Sharma For both the Indian team and Mumbai Indians (MI), Suryakumar praised the former Indian captain for creating a comfortable focused atmosphere in the dressing room.

“Rohit Bhai is the person who makes all the people around him comfortable. His door is 24/7 open for everyone,” Suryakumar said. “He is an inspiration for young players – calm, acceptable and always leading for example.”

Suryakumar said that Rohit’s human-management skills and the ability to handle pressure with composer are the qualities he tries to adopt under his leadership.

“Every captain played by me has taught me something unique. I just try to take the best from them,” He concluded with a smile.
