India’s T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav recently paid a courtesy call on Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai. The meeting attracted attention as speculation continues over Suryakumar’s future as India’s T20I captain ahead of the team’s next international assignment.

The conversation took place on Friday, June 5, at Varsha, the official residence of the Maharashtra Chief Minister. Suryakumar Yadav meets Maharashtra Chief Minister amid speculation over India’s T20I captaincy

India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav paid a courtesy visit to Devendra Fadnavis at his official residence Varsha in Mumbai, according to a social media post from the Chief Minister’s Office.

“Today, Indian cricketer Suryakumar Yadav paid a courtesy call on Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at his official residence Varsha in Mumbai,” CMO Maharashtra posted on Twitter.

Surya has enjoyed a successful stint as India’s T20I captain. The 36-year-old has won 40 of his 52 matches with a win percentage of 80.76. He took over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma after India’s 2024 T20 World Cup win and has since led the team to the Asia Cup title and another T20 World Cup win in March.

India have started planning for future T20I leadership ahead of major global events

According to reports, the selectors are reviewing India’s long-term T20I leadership plans. The board wants to create a stable captaincy structure for the future as the team prepares for major events over the next few years.

While it is unclear whether the captaincy issue will be formally discussed, India’s preparations for the 2028 T20 World Cup and the return of cricket at the Los Angeles Olympics are expected to influence future leadership decisions. The selectors are reportedly exploring several options.

If changes are made then Hardik Pandya is being considered as one of the main candidates. Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Tilak Verma, Axar Patel and Ishan Kishan have also strengthened their leadership qualities through domestic and franchise cricket.

Increasing competition has put Suryakumar Yadav’s T20I spot under scrutiny

According to reports, questions have emerged over Suryakumar Yadav’s long-term future as India’s T20I captain due to his recent batting struggles. The rise of young players has also increased competition for places in the middle order, putting additional pressure on the senior batsmen.

Players like Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Rajat Patidar have strengthened the competition in T20 cricket with their aggressive attitude. As a result, Suryakumar’s place in the team is facing more scrutiny than before.

Despite leading India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title, Suryakumar scored 242 runs at an average of 30.25 in nine matches during the tournament. He also endured a tough IPL 2026 season, scoring 270 runs in 13 matches for Mumbai Indians at an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54.

The right-handed batsman also struggled in 2025, scoring 218 runs at an average of 13.63 in 19 T20I innings. He recently failed to score a big score for Triumph Knights Mumbai North East in the T20 Mumbai League.
