Veteran Team India cricketers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will return to international action during the upcoming three -match series against Australia later this month. He has not played any competitive cricket since the IPL 2025 season, but recently available fitness tests for selection and will play under Shubman Gill.
Virat and Rohit retired from T20 Eye and Test and will now play only in ODIs only for India. They will have limited performance for international cricket before the 2027 World Cup. India has not been represented since men in Dubai since men in the impressive 2025 Champions Trophy campaign.
Shubman Gill T20 World Cup is likely to become T20I captain after 2026
Shubman Gill was appointed as India’s ODI captain for the upcoming Australia series. The aim of the Control Board for Cricket in India (BCCI) is the aim of Grroom Gill as an all-format captain for Indian cricket in the coming decade.
According to a PTI report, Shubman Gill also expect Suryakumar Yadav to succeed as a T20 captain after the World Cup in India. Meanwhile, the result of the tournament is considered less important.
“Shubman Gill is also expected to take over the reins from Suryakumar Yadav after the T20 World Cup in India,” the report said.
The report said, “The result of the tournament will be insufficient as is as the Champions Trophy skipper with Rohit’s victory. The cumulative result of these three aspects is that Rohit Sharma’s international career is ending.”

Suryakumar Yadav took over the captaincy of T20I with Rohit Sharma last year. Under Rohit, Suryakumar had experienced major moments including winning a memorable match in the 2024 T20 World Cup final.
Suryakumar won his first trophy under his tenure by winning the Asia Cup. However, his personal batting performances were disappointing. He scored only 72 runs in six innings at an average of 18, with the best score of 47 not out in group stage against Pakistan.
India has flourished under its leadership in T20Is, winning all six bilateral chains and suffering only three defeats in Zimbabwe, South Africa and England. The team will watch to maintain this speed during Australia’s upcoming tour.

Indian cricket head coach Gautam Gambhir and Chief Selector Ajit Aggarkar is undergoing a major infection. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ended their T20I career after India’s World Cup victory in June 2024 and fled from tests earlier this year.
On Saturday, October 4, Agarkar nominated Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain of India during the Squad’s announcement for the Australia Tour, with a former BCCI officer referred to it as a “GA-AG order”, indicating a clear change in the direction.
According to a PTI report, Gambhir and Agkar have already started the scheme keeping in mind the 2027 ODI World Cup. They believe that Rohit and Kohli may not be a long time option and have promoted Gill as part of the team’s future strategy.
