Suryakumar Yadav’s future as India’s T20 captain looks uncertain and the coming weeks could bring one of the biggest changes in the national set-up. After months of poor form and fitness concerns, the selectors are now seriously considering looking ahead to Suryakumar Yadav.
The BCCI selectors have already made plans to move in a new direction after IPL 2026 ends. Indeed, India are set to start a new T20 cycle with tours of Ireland and England, and the team management wants a new spark in the team ahead of the 2028 T20 World Cup and the Olympics.

Indian selectors lost patience with Suryakumar Yadav; His secret wrist injury has been revealed
According to a Times of India report, Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy position is no longer safe and Shreyas Iyer is emerging as the strongest option to take over the role. The Indian selectors have lost their patience as Suryakumar’s poor performance continues in the ongoing IPL 2026.

The most surprising thing is that Suryakumar is reportedly suffering from wrist problem for a long time. The TOI report, quoting sources close to BCCI and Team India, has claimed that the right-handed batsman has been ‘dodging wrist problems’ for a long time.

The Mumbai Indians star reportedly continued playing despite pain and discomfort in his right wrist and is not letting anyone notice it. He has been battling this problem since the last IPL season and injury management has secretly become a part of his daily routine.
Suryakumar Yadav hid serious wrist problem while leading India?
During IPL matches and India games, the right-handed batsman was regularly seen with heavy tape on his right wrist while batting and fielding, and even avoided ‘direct pressing exercises’. But very few people knew how serious the discomfort had become.
Surprisingly, the team doctors reportedly spent extra time supporting the wrist, heavily taping and padding it before practice sessions so that Suryakumar could continue training normally. And this happened during T20 World Cup 2026 also. Still, the Indian captain managed to continue playing without showing much disappointment on the field.

Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy is in danger as selectors eye Shreyas Iyer
Even though India won the T20 World Cup under his captaincy earlier this year, his poor batting has become a major headache and the selectors have reportedly become worried about his consistency. Since taking charge of the T20 team in 2024, Suryakumar has had to go through a very bad phase with the bat. The selectors are now looking at the bigger picture.
Suryakumar is already 35 years old, and with back-to-back international competitions coming up in the next two years, the Indian cricket team management wants someone who can lead the team for a long time without any fitness concerns, and Shreyas Iyer is the frontrunner because of his calm leadership style and recent performances.
There is a real possibility that Iyer could return to India’s T20 setup not just as a batsman but directly as captain. Last year, Iyer led Punjab Kings to the IPL final and became the only captain to lead three teams to the title, and even in IPL 2026, he has been excellent as both captain and batsman.
