Suryakumar Yadav brushes off talk of new captain in India’s T20I team, focuses on Olympic gold

Suryakumar Yadav has denied all the rumors going on about his international career. After winning the T20 World Cup 2026 trophy, there was some speculation over his leadership role in the format. Some cricket fans thought that the team management might try a new captain for the T20I team in place of Yadav.

In a recent interview with news agency PTI, Yadav said that he will try his best to guide the team to win the gold medal in the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Suryakumar Yadav revealed his next plan for Team India

Indian cricket is now in good shape and is continuously winning trophies in various ICC tournaments. Along with the men’s national cricket team, the women’s cricket team and under-19 teams have also claimed specific trophies in recent times. The T20 World Cup 2026 silverware came as the cherry on top.

During an exclusive interview with PTI, Suryakumar Yadav said that winning consecutive T20 World Cups (2024 T20 World Cup and 2026 T20 World Cup) is a very special moment for him. Yadav’s next target is an Olympic medal to continue his trophy winning streak.

The Team India captain said, “I am feeling good. Winning 24 and 26 in a row is a very special feeling. After winning the T20 World Cup in 2024, we thought it would be great if we win the trophy on our soil in 2026.”

“The next target is definitely to win gold in the Olympics in India. Because we are in good shape in the team. So, the 2028 Olympic gold is our next target. In the same year, there will be the T20 World Cup. And if India wins the 2028 World Cup, it will be great”, Suryakumar Yadav said while confirming his plans.

Twelve teams have been confirmed for the next edition of T20 World Cup 2026

The next T20 World Cup will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand. From October 21 to November 19, in which 20 teams will participate. A total of 12 teams, including the host nations- Australia and New Zealand, have already qualified for the upcoming edition of the ICC T20 World Cup.

The teams that qualified in the Super 8 of the recently concluded edition have also been confirmed for the 2028 title race. The remaining eight spots will be determined through regional qualifiers starting in mid-2026.

Suryakumar Yadav became the third Indian captain after MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma to lift the T20 World Cup trophy. The Mumbaikar is currently in the elite club. Despite such a huge achievement, he decided to remain humble, showing respect to successful former captains.

With a smile on his face, the captain said, “I feel good after joining that distinguished company. But it is a very special feeling that I am talking to such great people. So, I will try to do the same in the future and show India more trophies.”
