Suryakumar Yadav blocks Shubman Gill takeover, declares himself India captain for T20 World Cup 2026

The fifth and final T20 match of the series between the India national cricket team led by Suryakumar Yadav and the Australia national cricket team led by Mitchell Marsh was held on Saturday, 8 November.

The match at the Brisbane Cricket Ground, Woolloongabba was abandoned due to persistent rain and India won the series 2–1 against Australia.

Good series with bat, ball and field too – Suryakumar Yadav

The first match of the T20 series between India and Australia was abandoned due to rain in Canberra and the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the second match in Melbourne with a comfortable 4-wicket win.

Then India started the comeback journey and won the third match in Hobart by 5 wickets and the fourth match in Carrara by 48 runs. India managed to win another T20 series after the fifth match was washed out due to rain.

Speaking to Adam Gilchrist after the match, Suryakumar Yadav said that India performed brilliantly in all three departments in the series. He said:

“Wanted the game to be completed in Canberra but that’s not in our control. The way everyone contributed and the way we came back from 0-1 down is credit to all the boys. It was a good series with the bat, the ball and the field.”

Bumrah-Arshdeep combination is lethal- Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar further said that Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh form a lethal fast-bowling pair, while Varun Chakravarthy, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel are exceptional spin-bowling options. He said:

“Both the fast bowlers and the spinners know their job very well. Bumrah-Arshdeep is a lethal combination. And then Axar, Varun are doing what they do best. And Vashish is coming in handy in the last game. He has played a lot of T20 cricket now, he brings a lot to the table and is supporting himself.”

“It’s a good headache – a lot of players are performing really well. Playing three strong teams – Australia, South Africa and New Zealand – will be a great preparation for the World Cup.

Suryakumar excited to lead India in T20 World Cup 2026

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has been going through a rough patch for a long time and many have called for his sacking. However, during the same conversation when Adam Gilchrist asked Suryakumar about leading India in the domestic T20 World Cup, he expressed his excitement over it and confirmed that he will lead, although there are no plans to sack Shubman Gill despite being seen as the captain across all formats. Suryakumar Yadav explained in detail:

“I recently saw the incredible support (from the crowd) that the women’s team that won the World Cup in India got. When you are playing at home, there is definitely a lot of pressure. But there is also a lot of excitement and responsibility.

“When you are playing in your own backyard, we will get immense support from everyone wherever we play in India. It will be a good challenge, an exciting tournament, but it is still a long way off. There are two important series to go. A lot of things need to be seen during that time. I am sure it will be an exciting World Cup.”
