T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav reportedly opposed the inclusion of Shubman Gill in India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad, raising questions over the team’s tactics and selection. Although head coach Gautam Gambhir and the selectors supported Gill, the final decision was overruled by the management rather than the captain.
India had a successful campaign at the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE, winning all three matches against Pakistan including the final under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav. However, the Men in Blue’s stellar performance has been overshadowed by off-field controversies, as the team is yet to receive its trophy.
Suryakumar Yadav opposes Shubman Gill’s place in Asia Cup 2025 squad
According to a report by Cricblogger, Suryakumar Yadav opposed the inclusion of Shubman Gill in the Indian team for the T20 tournament to be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Suryakumar expressed concern about the compatibility of the batsmen with India’s aggressive T20 strategy.
The Team India captain shared his concerns with the selection committee led by Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar that Gill’s batting style may not suit the explosive approach adopted by the team.
Minutes before the team was announced, Suryakumar learned that Gill had been included, which came as a surprise to him. He later accepted the decision, acknowledging that Gill’s inclusion would benefit India’s long-term prospects in T20 cricket.
Gautam Gambhir calls for Shubman Gill’s return to T20 team
Gautam Gambhir and the selectors favored Shubman Gill’s inclusion in the Indian squad for the continental tournament considering his recent form, versatility across all formats and potential as a future leader.
Despite Suryakumar Yadav’s concerns, the management insisted on Gill’s return while focusing on long-term succession planning. Gill has already taken the captaincy of the ODI and Test team from Rohit Sharma. He is being groomed for a future role as T20 captain after the 2026 World Cup.
The Punjab batsman has the experience of leading Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He captained the Ahmedabad-based franchise in the last two seasons, but was unable to lead the team to the title.
Shubman Gill disappointed with batting despite India’s title win in Asia Cup
Shubman Gill has scored an impressive 1,563 runs across all formats for India in 2025. He emerged as the leading run-scorer during his Test captaincy debut on the England tour. However, his performance during the Asia Cup 2025 was disappointing.
The right-handed batsman scored 127 runs in seven innings at an average of 21.17, without scoring any half-centuries. Gill, who was the vice-captain, contributed in a crucial opening stand with Abhishek Sharma, who won the Player of the Tournament.
The team management is gradually grooming Gill for future leadership roles, with the aim of creating a smooth succession plan across all formats. While Suryakumar Yadav is leading India’s T20 team, the Asia Cup served as a platform to integrate Gill into the broader leadership strategy.
Gill made his debut as India’s ODI captain during the series opener against Australia in Perth on Sunday. He replaced Rohit Sharma in this role. However, in this encounter the team had to face defeat by seven wickets.
