Suryakumar Yadav’s individual performance remains under question mostly because of his batting statistics. Even in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2026, where Team India was crowned champions, Yadav’s form was far from his best.

Despite the poor batting performance, Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy speaks for itself. Yadav may not have been able to do much with the bat, but he brought glory to the team with his leadership qualities on home soil.

As soon as he took over the responsibility of captaincy, Suryakumar Yadav’s batting form gradually started declining.

Yadav’s rise in the international cricket circuit was rapid. He was appointed as the leader of the T20I team only after spending almost 5 years as a batsman. As a batsman, before assuming the role of captain, the Mumbai-born player had a batting average of 43.40, while as captain, it is currently 28.65.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting understood the influence of Suryakumar Yadav behind India’s success.

With declining statistics, how did he help the team lift the T20 World Cup? Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting tried to understand the method adopted by Suryakumar.

Ponting said that Yadav’s credibility goes beyond on-field statistics. As a captain, he had to do a lot behind the scenes, in the dressing room, which cricket fans did not see.

Ponting, speaking at the ICC Review, said, “It’s more about what he does off the field, the things people don’t see and how he interacts with his players. He didn’t have a good time as a player, but yet he’s standing at the end with the World Cup trophy.”

As a former captain, Ricky Ponting can easily imagine how much pressure was on Yadav’s shoulders when he was not scoring runs in the World Cup. SKY performed well in the tournament and scored 242 runs in the entire campaign.

“As a former captain I know, when you are not batting at your best, captaincy can be really difficult. And when you are batting well, captaincy can be really easy.”

Ponting points to Suryakumar Yadav’s man-management skills off the field

One of the highlights of India’s victorious 2026 World Cup was some individual brilliance in the high moments. Players like Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya are experienced campaigners, and they often try to give their best. But Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, who are extremely talented but struggled for most parts of the tournament, performed at their best when the team needed them most. A captain’s job is to get the best performance from each player. Suryakumar might have done this well.

Ricky Ponting said, “It will be really interesting to see how Surya interacts with Abhishek (Sharma) and Sanju (Samson) over the last few weeks. This is where the real stories on true leadership will emerge.”
