Former Indian batsman Mohammad Kaif feels that Suryakumar Yadav is not able to utilize top fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah properly. He also mentioned the methods of former captain Rohit Sharma and praised how he controlled Bumrah’s spells, often resulting in massive game-changing results.
As long as a captain is doing the job and is on his way to victory, no one questions his most unorthodox plans, but when the results do not go in his favor, people do not shy away from finding flaws in the most obvious strategies. Same is the situation with the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav.
Suryakumar Yadav was widely praised for his methods in the shortest format of the game; However, he broke his nerves with the bat but also lost the first game with the Indian team after their previous ICC defeat, which came back in the CWC 2023 final.
“We lost the match between 7th and 15th over” – Mohammad Kaif’s verdict on Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy
Former RCB and Indian batsman Mohammad Kaif feels that Suryakumar is not using the right tactics while rotating Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling spells. He has started handing over the new ball to Bumrah since the match against Pakistan. Bumrah has also returned among the wickets after his latest promotion.
However, Bumrah’s usage has been much more predictable, with few overs in the first two overs and later in the death overs. He said India lost the match to South Africa in the middle overs when David Miller and Dewald Brewis dominated the Indian bowlers. One over of Bumrah could have been bowled there.
“We lost the match between the 7th and 15th overs. You used Bumrah’s two overs early and kept the remaining two for the death. But Rohit Sharma never used Bumrah like that,” he said in his YouTube video.
Mohammad Kaif reveals how Rohit Sharma controlled Jasprit Bumrah’s spell
Former Indian captain Rohit Sharma has not been the most successful among Indian captains in ICC tournaments without doing anything. He had his own strategies and was often seen as the captain of new possibilities.
He recognized that Bumrah could be used efficiently to contain the batsmen when they were at their best and would not shy away from attacking even the great bowler. Therefore, Rohit always got an over from Bumrah in the middle overs.
Kaif said that there is no bigger match-winner than Bumrah in the Indian team and captain Suryakumar Yadav should ideally utilize this asset.
He said, “He bowled one over in the middle to break the partnership. There is a big difference between their spells. There is no bigger match-winner than Bumrah in this team. They need to get him to bowl just one over in the powerplay, and then get him to bowl the 11th or 12th over.”
Now Jasprit Bumrah is the highest wicket taker for India in T20 World Cup.
With the three wickets taken by Jasprit Bumrah against South Africa in the last game, he became the leading wicket-taker for India in the ICC T20 World Cup. He finished with excellent figures of 3/15, dismissing Quinton de Kock, Ryan Rickelton and later Corbyn Bosch.
In terms of wickets, he left behind former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who had 32 wickets to his name. Bumrah has now taken 33 wickets in 22 matches in the ICC T20 World Cup. He was also the player of the tournament for India in the last edition, which they won.
