Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has dropped a bomb with his latest prediction about the two teams to capture the title in this edition of the ICC T20 World Cup. Gavaskar completely left India out of his favorite list.
India have revived their chances of entering the World Cup semi-finals with a win over Zimbabwe. Currently, both West Indies and India stand at the point where they have lost their matches to South Africa and have dominated Zimbabwe with big wins.
While there is a lot of hype surrounding the India vs West Indies match at Eden Gardens in the T20 World Cup, the Men in Blue have the best chances of reaching the World Cup, but West Indies have not lost a single game at Eden Gardens.
Sunil Gavaskar eliminated India, chose these two as strong contenders for the World Cup!
Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar went on a blast with his latest favorite selection at the World Cup. He did not choose India as one of his two favourites, but chose South Africa and England as his two favourites.
The last time the World Cup was played in India, England were semi-finalists and lost to West Indies. South Africa, on the other hand, are still in search of their maiden ICC limited overs title. However, in this edition of the World Cup they have certainly showcased their strength and emerged as the only undefeated team.
Sunil Gavaskar on India Today said, “For me, the two favorites are South Africa and England. England’s win may have been close, but it is again the modern trend of finishing the game with a six. Otherwise, England’s win would have been a very easy win against Pakistan.”
Sunil Gavaskar said, “England, because they have bowlers who can bowl spin as well as fast. They have a very good bowling attack and also batting, they have a lot of depth. So I think England and South Africa are two teams to keep an eye on.”
England and South Africa’s World Cup tour in brief
South Africa started their campaign with a massive 57-run win against World Cup powerhouse Canada. They then played one of the most thrilling games of this year’s T20 World Cup, where they defeated Afghanistan in the second round of the super-over.
After that, there was no looking back for South Africa, as they easily defeated New Zealand and then finished their group stage undefeated with their final win over the United Arab Emirates. Coming into the Super-8, they won the rematch of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final against India. They made a great entry into the semi-finals by defeating the in-form West Indies team.
England, on the other hand, started with a close win against Nepal, where they won by just 4 runs. West Indies suffered a crushing defeat in the second match. Wins against Scotland and Italy, albeit by close margins, helped them get their campaign back on track.
In Super-8, he has defeated two Asian giants i.e. Sri Lanka and Pakistan on the spinning track. Their final match is scheduled for February 27 against New Zealand at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
The qualification round could end with South Africa and England meeting in the semi-finals
Although both South Africa and England have reached the semi-finals of the competition, England have yet to seal their place. Irrespective of the result of the match against Zimbabwe, South Africa will remain on top of the table.
However, England will be able to secure the top spot from their group only if they defeat New Zealand in today’s match. If New Zealand beats England, they will finish second in their group and play South Africa in the semi-finals.
However, a win for them could mean that they will play the semi-finals against India or West Indies at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
