Sunil Gavaskar defends Shreyas Iyer and Team India amid BCCI review report

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold a discussion to review India’s T20 series defeats against Ireland and England. Through the meeting, the cricket board officials are likely to address the issues that led to Team India’s 2-0 defeat against Ireland and then 4-0 against England in the T20Is.

Officials can also take action if needed. The great Sunil Gavaskar urged BCCI not to take any hasty decision as any hasty step can do more harm than good to the team.

Shreyas Iyer-led T20I team is yet to win

Without Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, the current Team India in the T20 format is not the same, having won the 2026 T20 World Cup just a few months ago. While Suryakumar Yadav lost his place in the team, Jasprit Bumrah was rested for the T20 series against England and Hardik Pandya was ruled out of the team due to injury.

The board appointed Shreyas Iyer as India’s T20I captain in place of Suryakumar Yadav. The Men in Blue have played six T20 matches under Iyer’s captaincy so far; India lost in all the games. India faced strong playing conditions against Ireland and England, but performed poorly throughout the competition.

Players who performed well in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League failed to perform when it mattered most. The board will try to point out the issues.

Sunil Gavaskar wrote in a column for Sportstar, “The BCCI is going to review the debacle, and there are rumors that some people may be held to account. It would be an extreme step, given that barely four months ago India were world champions and are still ranked No. 2 in the ICC rankings.”

Sunil Gavaskar says batsmen struggle even on flat pitches

Some cricket experts believe that due to the Indian Premier League, where batsmen mostly play on flat pitches, there is a lack of technique against bouncy pitches. Sunil Gavaskar observed that even in home conditions, Indian batsmen struggle to face short-pitched balls.

“There has been a lot of discussion about how playing on flat batting pitches has spoiled Indian batsmen. Even on the so-called flat pitches in the IPL, most Indian batsmen have struggled against the short ball. This is a technical failure. With the weight on the front foot and the back foot locked, there is no transfer of weight to deal with the ball moving towards the face,” he added.

Sunil Gavaskar asked BCCI to increase the length of the boundary

Gavaskar also pointed out that unlike the longer boundaries in other countries, including England and South Africa, shorter boundaries allow batsmen to score runs faster in the IPL. Gavaskar asked BCCI officials to adjust the length of the boundary lines.

Sunil Gavaskar said, “Short boundaries are also the culprit, as many sixes cross the boundary line and hence can be caught elsewhere. This needs to be addressed urgently if India are to regain the ODI title on fast, bouncy pitches in South Africa. India may have long boundaries on every ground, but is there the will for it? That is the question. We will see soon.”
