In a latest revelation, former English fast bowler Stuart Broad’s father Chris Board has revealed that he mocked his son with a jersey signed by Yuvraj Singh during Christmas, which the English great threw in the dustbin in sheer frustration.
Yuvraj Singh’s six sixes in the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup in 2007 has been hailed as a fairy tale in the game of cricket for 18 years, but it was a nightmare for the great English fast bowler.
However, ultimately young Stuart Broad had a hugely successful career, which recently ended in July 2023. He later won the T20 World Cup for England in 2010 and finished his career as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in Test history. Broad had 602 wickets, the second most by a fast bowler behind England teammate James Anderson’s 704 wickets.
Stuart Broad was humiliated by his father’s Christmas gift
Speaking to The Telegraph recently, Chris Broad revealed that after the match was over, he got an Indian jersey signed by Yuvraj Singh, which he later gave to his son as a Christmas gift, but to his dismay, when Stuart Broad saw it, he threw it straight in the dustbin.
He said, “He didn’t appreciate my gesture after Yuvraj Singh hit six sixes. I got an Indian shirt signed by Yuvraj and gave it to him for Christmas. Apparently, he opened the gift, looked at it and threw it in the dustbin. I think his sense of humor failed him somewhat in this case.”
Yuvraj Singh reveals his motivational message for the England fast bowler
Nearly half a decade ago, on The Doosra Podcast, Yuvraj had opened up about the jersey that Chris Broad, who was the match referee for the game, had worn when he approached him a day after his son hit six sixes.
He told the Indian Star,You almost ended my son’s career; Now you have to sign this shirt for him.
The Indian legend wrote a heartfelt message on the jersey for Broad, “I remember giving my India jersey and writing a message that read, ‘I’ve been hit for five sixes in an over, and I know how it feels. All the best, all the best for the future of England cricket.’ It was just some fun banter with Chris Broad at that time.
After retiring from international cricket, Stuart Broad spoke openly on the 6-six incident.
After his retirement from Ashes 2023 at The Oval, Stuart Broad recalled that Yuvraj Singh’s six sixes were a changing moment in his career, as it taught him the importance of focus and helped him create a mental routine and shaped him as a fast bowler.
“Yeah, it was obviously a very tough day, what would I have been, 21, 22? I learned a lot, I based a whole mental routine through that experience, knowing that I had very little left as an international performer. I ramped up my preparation; I had no pre-ball routine, I had no focus. I started to create my ‘warrior mode’ what I call it after that experience,” Stuart Broad said.
