Steve Smith broke Babar Azam mentally by refusing to take a single, scored the next 32 runs; Pakistan batsman’s explosion

A tense moment between two superstar batsmen quickly turned into pure drama as Steve Smith and Babar Azam found themselves at the center of attention at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) during the Big Bash League 2025-26 (BBL 2025-26) clash between Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder.

SCG drama: Babar Azam fumes as Steve Smith refuses to take a single, next over turns brutal

It all started at the end of the 11th over when Steve Smith flatly refused to take a run off the last ball of Chris Green. The in-form Australian batsman wanted to remain on strike and control the next over, but Babar Azam did not like this move.

The Pakistan star looked quite disappointed and went to Smith as Babar would be looking to complete his half-century in the BBL 2025-26 clash against Sydney Thunder at the SCG on January 16. The two exchanged a few words, with Smith calmly explaining his plan at the crease.

What happened next made Smith’s decision excellent. In the very next over, the Australian star went completely aggressive and played a huge knock of 32 runs which completely changed the momentum of the game and put immense pressure on David Warner’s Thunder.

Steve Smith is ready to create history in BBL

Smith completely demolished Ryan Hadlee in the 12th over and produced one of the most brutal overs ever seen in the history of the Big Bash League. The over started with a full ball on the off stump. Smith stepped forward calmly and flicked it to deep backward square leg for six.

The next delivery was a half-volley and Smith stayed behind and lifted it over long-on. Then a low full toss came in the middle. Smith again moved inside the line and hit another six over deep backward square leg. Three balls, three sixes.

Well, then Hadlee tried to slow the next ball, full on off, but Smith waited, timed it right, and sent it over deep square leg for his fourth six in a row. For the Thunder, things went from bad to worse when Hadley overshot badly. It was ruled a no-ball and Smith cut the short delivery outside off for four runs, giving himself a free hit.

The over eventually ended with Smith driving a slow full ball through cover and running out for two runs thanks to a brilliant diving save in the deep. By the end of the over, Smith had given away 32 runs, which was the most expensive over in BBL history, which surprised everyone.

Babar Azam bowled on 47 runs, broke the boundary cushion in anger

However, the drama reached its peak at the start of the 13th over when Babar’s innings came to a painful end. Facing a short-of-length ball from Nathan McAndrew on the off stump, Babar tried to hit a powerful shot but was hit by a thick inside edge which hit his leg stump.

He was out after scoring 47 runs in 39 balls with the help of seven fours. Angry at being out, Babar hit his bat hard on the boundary cushion while walking.

However, the damage had already been done by Smith as Sydney Sixers chased down the target of 189 runs inside 18 overs at the SCG. Smith was named player of the match for his 100 off 42 balls against the Thunder as the Sixers boosted their BBL 2025-26 playoff chances with a thrilling win.
