Stephen Fleming set to become England’s new Test coach: report

Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming is the frontrunner to become the next head coach of the England national cricket team Test team. This could be his first assignment after being sacked as the head coach of Chennai Super Kings (CSK). There were other names in England’s shortlist, but the former Kiwi captain emerged as the frontrunner after several interviews.

Stephen Fleming, who was associated with CSK and other Super Kings franchises, lost his job after a poor Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) season. He will work with his former teammate Brendon McCullum, who was recently sacked from the Test coach role, but will remain as the white-ball coach. This will be a reunion of two former teammates.

Stephen Fleming to take over as head coach from South Africa series

Stephen Fleming is reported to take charge appropriately for the tour of South Africa in December, his next Test assignment. England plan to play 10 Tests before the home Ashes next summer, having not won a series against Australia since 2015, and winning back the Ashes will be Fleming’s first big task since being appointed as head coach.

Fleming overtook the likes of Richard Dawson and Jonathan Trott as well as players like Tom Moody and Justin Langer. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) initially thought that Andy Flower was their leading candidate; However, he was not interested in taking the job as he prioritized his franchise commitments with Royal Challengers Bangalore and London Spirit.

Justin Langer, who was also in contention, confirmed on Wednesday that he had not had any discussions with the ECB. However, he loves Test cricket and if the board had offered him the role, he might have taken it up. Director of Cricket Rob Key is managing everything regarding the appointment of coaches.

Stephen Fleming, after retiring from cricket in 2007, joined CSK as head coach in 2009, the season after he joined CSK as a player. During his tenure as head coach, he won five trophies with the Men in Yellow, with MS Dhoni as captain.

Stephen Fleming’s coaching career

He has led the team to 10 Indian Premier League (IPL) finals, winning 5 titles (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023). Including the Champions League T20, he reached 11 major global T20 finals and won a total of 7 championships during his 18-year tenure with the franchise.

Fleming was also in charge of its sister franchises in Major League Cricket (Texas Super Kings) and South Africa’s SA20 (Joburg Super Kings). However, he also failed to win trophies in the MLC and SA20.

Brendon McCullum and Stephen Fleming have a good relationship

Brendon McCullum, who was the Test coach in 2022, gets the role for all formats in 2025. But he has now been removed from the role of Test coach following England’s recent failure in the traditional format of the game.

Fleming and McCullum have an old relationship, as McCullum made his debut under the captaincy of Fleming and he considers him his mentor.

Joe Root is set to captain the team in the upcoming series against Pakistan, but only the new coach will decide the new captain who will hold the responsibility of captaincy for a long time, as Harry Brook is also in the race to become the vice-captain of the Test team and captain of the white-ball teams.
