After much speculation, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has officially appointed Stephen Fleming as the new Test head coach of the England national cricket team.
In another surprise decision, the ECB has brought back Joe Root as Test captain. The experienced batsman replaced Ben Stokes as England began a new chapter under Fleming.

Former New Zealand captain and former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming has replaced his former teammate Brendon McCullum as England’s red-ball head coach. However, McCullum will remain the white-ball head coach of the England team.
The ECB is hopeful that the new coach-captain combination can revive the fortunes of the England Test team after a disappointing time under McCullum.
However, Fleming will not start his job immediately and Marcus Trescothick will act as the interim head coach for the upcoming three-match Test series against Pakistan on home soil. Meanwhile, Shane McDermott has joined the Afghanistan coaching staff following Pakistan’s exit.
Fleming has been given this break to spend time with his family in New Zealand ahead of the busy England season. Fleming will arrive in England at the end of this summer to begin preparations for the crucial Test tour of South Africa in December 2026.

The ECB said in an official media release: “After a rigorous process, which included a number of high-quality candidates, the ECB’s selection panel unanimously agreed to Fleming’s appointment. Fleming’s role will begin following the start of the upcoming Rothesay Test series against Pakistan, during which Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim head coach.”
Richard Gould, ECB Chief Executive Officer, said, “We are delighted to confirm Stephen Fleming as our England Men’s Test coach, with Root returning as Test captain. Stephen is one of the best coaches in the world, and has a proven track record of creating winning environments over long periods of time. We believe his leadership style, along with Joe Root, can take the men’s Test team forward.”

Meanwhile, Stephen Fleming said he is extremely excited to join as England’s new Test head coach and feels proud to take over one of the most prestigious coaching positions in the world. He is excited to work with Joe Root and Harry Brook and said his aim is to help the young talent in England fulfill their potential as world-class cricketers.
The New Zealand player said that English county cricket has had a big impact on his career in the past, so now he is hoping to give something back by helping the England team succeed.
Fleming said in an official statement shared by the ECB: “I am honored to be appointed. I look forward to working with the players and bed in the gains made by Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes. Of course, the ambition is always to win. But equally, it is about making sure the team is well placed for the medium and long-term future.”
Joe Root breaks silence after returning to England’s Test captaincy
Joe Root, on the other hand, said that he is proud to be England’s Test captain once again and is excited to lead the team into a new era. The new Test captain also expressed his excitement about working with new head coach Stephen Fleming.
Root said, “It is a huge honor and privilege to be asked to once again be the England men’s Test captain. I am excited to lead the next generation of players. The opportunity to do so alongside Stephen is also a big motivator.
