Sri Lanka women’s squad announced for T20 World Cup 2026; Chamari Athapaththu was handed over the captaincy

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 is just a few weeks away as teams are getting ready for the mega event. This year, it is set to take place in England and Wales, as the Sri Lankan women’s team has announced their squad for the upcoming major tournament. This is going to be a big event after the rise of women’s cricket.

The Sri Lankan squad was announced on Friday evening, as Chamari Athapaththu will lead the team, as she has been the only player from the country to represent all 9 editions previously. Leading the team in a tournament like the World Cup in a SENA country is a huge honor for an opening batsman.

They will depart for England on 3 June 2026 ahead of the competition, which is scheduled to be held from 12 June to 5 July. The Sri Lankan team will participate in two practice matches in the derby against Pakistan on 6 June and Netherlands on 9 June. Before finally taking on hosts England at the iconic Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham on June 12.
