Sri Lanka Playing XI vs Pakistan- 1st T20I, Pakistan tour of Sri Lanka 2026:

Openers: Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (WK)

After a disappointing performance in this format of the game last year, Sri Lanka will be looking to start the year on a winning note in T20I cricket when they take on Pakistan in the first game of the three-match series on home soil.

The island nation has seen a change of leadership in the T20I format with the return of former captain Dasun Shanaka.

Apart from the change in captaincy, the former T20 World Cup winners have retained the core that has been part of the Sri Lankan setup in the last two assignments.

The team management will look to support their opening batsmen to get the team off to good starts and create a platform for the middle-order batsmen to put pressure on the opposition bowling attack, who may lack a specialist bowler.

The opening pair of Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis will also be tasked with scoring individually for the remaining few matches of the series to gain confidence and carry the same momentum into the next series.

Middle-order batsmen and all-rounders: Kamil Mishara, Kusal Perera, Charith Asalanka, Kamindu Mendis, Dasun Shanaka (captain), Wanindu Hasaranga.

A major reason for the team’s poor performance with the bat last year was the form or lack thereof of the Sri Lankan middle order and the captain is hopeful that the batsmen will improve on this in the upcoming match.

Names like Kamil Mishara, Kusal Perera, Charith Asalanka and Kamindu Mendis will be expected to perform well.

Along with the above batsmen, captain Dasun Shanka will also play an important role at the end of the innings while batting at number seven.

Shanaka will be supported by all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga, who is more than a good batsman and will be entrusted with the responsibility of showcasing his batting ability in the last five overs.

Bowlers: Mahesh Theekshana, Nuwan Thushara, Dushmantha Chameera

As far as Sri Lanka’s bowling attack is concerned, it will include several spinners and three fast bowlers including captain Dasun Shanaka.

However, the effectiveness of the spinners will depend on the amount of dew during the match.

This is why playing more than two spinners in the first T20I against Pakistan could be a big risk and Wanindu Hasaranga and Mahesh Theekshana should be trusted to take care of the spin bowling department of the team.

Sri Lanka’s fast bowling department will be handled by two specialist fast bowlers in Nuwan Thushara and Dushmantha Chamara, who will be assisted by Dasun Shanaka.

To stop Pakistan’s strong batting lineup, the home team will have to make every effort with the ball.
