India ready to return to Sri Lanka for a Test series for the first time in almost a decade, as the two Asian rivals prepare to face off in a two-match contest next month. The opening Test will be played at the Galle International Stadium from 15 to 19 August, followed by the second and final Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo from 23 to 27 August. With Shubman Gill leading the new-look Indian team, expectations are high as the visitors look to continue their impressive record against Sri Lanka in the longest format. Former Indian opening batsman Wasim Jaffer Has shared his prediction regarding the result of this series.
Wasim Jaffer predicts SL vs IND test series result
Ahead of the much-awaited series, Jaffer shared his prediction during a discussion on his YouTube channel and expressed confidence that India will emerge victorious in both the matches.
The former Test batsman believes that India is a much stronger team than Sri Lanka on paper and feels that anything less than a 2-0 win would fall short of expectations. Acknowledging Sri Lanka’s ability to compete on home soil, Jaffer said India’s superior batting depth and bowling resources make them favourites.
“I would say India should win the series 2-0. If you look at both the teams on paper, the Indian side is quite strong. So, if India does not win the series 2-0, it will be a disappointing result. Sri Lanka is a very good team, no doubt about that. But on paper, I think we are quite strong.” Jafar said.
India’s last Test tour of Sri Lanka was in 2017 when Virat Kohli’s side dominated the hosts with a comprehensive 3-0 series win. That tour demonstrated India’s grip in foreign Asian conditions and Jaffer believes the current team has the quality to deliver another solid performance.
Historically, India has held the edge in the rivalry. The two countries have faced each other in 46 Test matches, of which India has won 22, Sri Lanka has won seven, while 17 matches have ended in draws. The numbers underline India’s long-standing dominance, although Sri Lanka has often proved a tough opponent on turning tracks at home.

Under Shubman Gill, India hope to overcome the spin challenge of Sri Lanka
The upcoming series will also provide another major test Shubman Gill As Test captain of India. Having recently assumed the leadership duties, Gill will be expected to guide the team in conditions that are traditionally conducive to spin bowling and demand patience from the batsmen.
Galle and Colombo have historically offered assistance to the spinners as the match progresses, making shot selection and discipline important for visiting teams. India’s batting lineup will need to adapt quickly to slow surfaces, while the bowlers will need to exploit the conditions effectively.
Despite home advantage, Sri Lanka will rely on familiarity with the pitches and an experienced spin attack to challenge the visitors. However, India’s balanced team, comprising quality batsmen and a diverse bowling unit, has strengthened the belief among former cricketers that the tourists can dictate the series.
