Indian fast bowler Mohit Sharma has officially announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, bringing the curtains down on a professional journey of almost 14 years.

India’s veteran fast bowler ends 14-year professional career

The 37-year-old made the announcement via an emotional Instagram post, writing:
“Today, with a heavy heart, I announce my retirement from all forms of cricket. From representing Haryana to wearing the India jersey and playing in the IPL, this journey has been nothing short of a blessing.”

Mohit’s career began in 2011, when he made his first-class debut for Haryana, beginning his rise that soon saw him don India colors and enjoy success in domestic and franchise cricket.

Beyond IPL and international cricket, Mohit left behind strong domestic figures:

  • 127 wickets in 44 first-class matches
  • 86 wickets in 78 List A games
  • 167 wickets in 172 T20 matches

Mohit Sharma’s cricket career: From CSK success to India debut and World Cup success

After joining, Mohit became famous on the national radar. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) In the IPL, where he made his T20 debut in 2013. His fast new ball swing and clever variations made him an instant asset. His performances earned him a place in India’s limited-overs setup, where he represented the country in 26 ODIs and 8 T20Is between 2013 and 2015, taking 37 wickets.

A standout moment of his international career came during the 2015 Cricket World Cup, where Mohit demonstrated his consistency on the global stage by finishing as India’s joint third-highest wicket-taker. In the IPL, he had already grabbed attention by taking a sensational 23 wickets for CSK in 2014, and won the Purple Cap even before making his India debut.

After a challenging phase with Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Mohit re-established himself as a death overs specialist, and eventually earned a remarkable career revival with Gujarat Titans in the 2023 IPL season. At the age of 35, he took 27 wickets, missed the Purple Cap by a narrow margin and emerged as one of the standout performers of the tournament.

Mohit recently played eight matches for Delhi Capitals during the IPL 2025 season. However, after taking only two wickets at an economy of 10.28, he was released by the franchise as part of their off-season reshuffle.

In 120 IPL matches, Mohit took an impressive 134 wickets, cementing his reputation as one of the most influential Indian seamers in the league.

Mohit’s emotional thanks to his family, mentors and teammates

In his retirement note, Mohit expressed his heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to his journey.
“Special thanks to the Haryana Cricket Association for being the backbone of my career.” He wrote thanking Anirudh sir for his guidance.

He thanked the BCCI, coaches, teammates, IPL franchises, support staff and friends who supported him throughout his career.

He saved his most personal tribute for his wife, saying: “Special thanks to my wife, who has always handled my mood swings and temper and supported me in everything. I look forward to serving the game in new ways.”
