Former Control Board for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly has opened the controversy of Virat Kohli’s exit from India’s captaincy. Ganguly also revealed that Rohit Sharma was not keen to play the role of leadership, saying that he was to convince the captain.
Virat Kohli stepped as the T20I captain of Team India before the ICC T20 World Cup in 2021. After the event, BCCI President, Sourav Ganguly, appointed Rohit Sharma as ODI captain. Kohli also abandoned his role as a Test captain after losing a test series against South Africa in 2022.

Sourav Ganguly said that BCCI always wanted Virat Kohli to continue as captain in white balls. Ganguly said that after Kohli’s decision to step down from the T20I captaincy, Rohit Sharma was appointed to lead in both formats.

Ganguly said, “It is quite natural that you have a captain for a white ball. We always wanted Virat to be the captain, but he did not want to continue, and this is where it was. And then, of course, of course, came to Rohit,” Ganguli said.
He said, “He was captaining Mumbai Indians (MI). We needed a Test captain as Virat was a Test captain by then, and he ended in South Africa.”

Sourav Ganguly revealed that Rohit Sharma was initially hesitant to take the test captaincy due to workload concerns. Ganguly said that he convinced Rohit to lead India in Test cricket. The former cricketer said that Rohit agreed to the role after a few days to consider this.

Rohit took India to the final of the World Test Championship and the 2023 ODI World Cup, but Australia suffered defeat on both occasions.
However, the experienced cricketer ended the ICC Trophy of India by guiding the team to win the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA, after which a win in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
