Former India captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly criticized Pakistan coach Mike Hessen’s claim that Mohammad Nawaz is the world’s best spinner during the ongoing Asia Cup 2025. Ganguly said that Nawaz would have to prove that his coach has “lost his mind,” describing Hessen’s statement.
Mohammad Nawaz has taken 71 wickets in 72 T20I, out of which an average of 22.42 economy is 7.25. The 31-year-old recently claimed a five-wicket race including a hat-trick in the Tri-series final against Afghanistan and took a wicket in his Asia Cup 2025 opener in a 93-run win over Oman.

During an interview with Anandbazar Patrika, Sourav Ganguly said that Mohammad Nawaz still needs to prove himself despite Pakistan’s head coach comments.

The journalist asked, “Pakistan coach Mike Hessen has claimed that his team has the best spinner in the world.”
“And who is that spinner?” Ganguly replied.
“Okay. Then let the spinner prove that the coach has not lost his mind,” he said.
No comparison between India and Pakistan – Sourav Ganguly
The former BCCI President predicted that India would dominate their upcoming struggle against Pakistan. Ganguly said that the current Pakistani team is weaker than the previous parties and said that the team led by Suryakumar Yadav is likely to win in a unilateral encounter.
“Quality has deteriorated greatly. Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Shoaib Akhtar, Saeed Anwar, Inzam-ul-Haq, Younis Khan, Mohammad Yusuf. All world class cricketers.
“There can be no comparison between the two teams in terms of talent,” he said.
India limited the UAE to 57 runs in 13.1 overs in its Asia Cup 2025 opener. Kuldeep Yadav claimed four wickets, while Shivam Dubey added three. Abhishek Sharma and Deputy captain Shubman Gill removed the destruction in the chase, and India won nine wickets in only 4.3 overs.

Pakistan dropped Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan for the Asia Cup, coach Mike Hessen asked them to work at their strike rate. Sourav Ganguly commented that the current Pakistan squad lacks the star power of previous teams.
