A recent report suggesting that Shubman Gill could make a comeback in India’s T20I setup and even emerge as a captaincy option has sparked debate in cricket circles.

The claim quickly gained popularity on social media, with many accounts raising the possibility of a dramatic comeback for the India ODI captain. However, journalists who closely follow developments surrounding the Indian team have now disputed this discussion, and some have publicly cast doubt on the report, indicating that Gill’s return to the T20I team is not in the near future.

Reports claim that Shubman Gill will make a comeback in T20

The discussion started after reports claimed that the selectors had backed Shubman Gill as the preferred candidate for India’s T20I captaincy after the 2026 T20 World Cup.

It was further said that Gill’s name was recommended to the selectors and the right-handed batsman could soon be seen back in India’s T20I team, which is currently led by Shreyas Iyer.

The claim attracted considerable attention as Gill has been out of India’s T20I plans for some time despite remaining a key figure in ODI and Test cricket. Furthermore, reports suggested that Gambhir was a strong supporter of Gill and wanted him to get a bigger role in the shortest format.

With Gill already captaining India in ODIs and being seen as one of the pillars of the next generation, the report naturally led to speculation whether another leadership change could be on the horizon.

Despite talk of comeback, hurdles remain in the way of Shubman Gill’s return to T-20.

However, journalists who closely cover Indian cricket immediately questioned these reports. Dainik Jagran journalist Abhishek Tripathi publicly responded to the claim and said he did not believe the report was accurate. His response came soon after the story was widely circulated on social media.

Sportstak’s Vikrant Gupta was also seen dismissing these speculations. During the discussion referenced by many cricket followers online, Gupta indicated that there was no solid basis for the claim that Gill was set to return as an option for T20I captaincy.

The responses of both journalists are significant as neither suggested that the Indian team management was actively considering Gill for the T20I leadership role at this stage.

This is in line with India’s current T20I structure, as Shreyas Iyer has been handed the captaincy following his immense success as a leader in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with various franchises.

Shubman Gill’s challenge is not just a competition for leadership. First, they need to bounce back a batting unit that has developed a clear identity around ultra-aggressive cricket. Unless there is a major change in the selection mindset, his path back to the T20I side will remain complicated despite the latest comeback talks.

Shubman Gill’s T20I numbers and IPL stats

Gill’s overall T20 record remains excellent. In 36 T20Is for India, he has scored 869 runs at an average of 28.03 and a strike rate of 138.59. He also has one century and three half-centuries to his name, with his highest score being 126 not out.

Although these numbers are respectable, India’s T20 setup has evolved rapidly in recent years. The emergence of explosive opening batsmen and the team’s preference for high-risk, high-reward batting have increased competition for places at the top of the order.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill’s IPL performance underlines his quality. He enjoyed a phenomenal IPL 2023 campaign for Gujarat Titans, scoring 890 runs in 17 matches at an average of 59.33 and a strike rate of 157.80 and hitting three centuries.

After this he scored 426 runs in IPL 2024 and then made a strong comeback in IPL 2025 scoring 650 runs at an average of 50.00. His best season as captain came in IPL 2026, when he scored 732 runs in 16 matches at an average of 45.75 and a strike rate above 163.

These figures show that Gill is one of the most consistent T20 batsmen in the country. However, the question is not whether he can score runs. The bigger question is whether his style fits the template currently created by India in T20Is.
