Young batsman Shubman Gill is in queue to be at the forefront of India for ODI captaincy, expected to be passed with Rohit Sharma. The selectors led by Ajit Agkar as the vice-captain of the T20I squad for the Asia Cup 2025, Gill, who is the current test captain, gave a glimpse of its long-term plans.
Rohit, who turned 38 this year, is still captaining the ODI side. He and Virat Kohli have already been away from tests and T20I and are now active in ODI only. He will play in the ODI series against Australia in October. The selectors can appoint new leadership with a look at the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Shubman Gill led Test Side for a draw 2-2 in England tour
Shubman Gill has become India’s most trusted youth leader among the formats. The right-handed batsman has already captained the test side and has guided the team 2–2 against the Anderson Tendulkar Trophy against England in 2025.
Gill performed impressive batting in England’s tests. He scored 754 runs in 10 innings at an average of 75.40. Gill converted all four-half-centuries including his 269 and 161 in the Birmingham Test in centuries.
Devjit Saikia recently talked to Shreyas Iyer as a captaincy contender. Gill was the vice-captain in India’s winning Champions Trophy 2025 campaign. He also has leadership experience with Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL.
Shubman Gill is emerging as Frontrunner to become ODI captain
According to Rohit Juglan of Revsportz, Shubman Gill is early emerging with an official announcement to handle India’s ODI captaincy. The selection committee is supporting Gill as an ideal option for role.
India’s current partition-capsi system is part of a transitional stage, but once the period ends this period, Gill is expected to lead the team in all three formats.
– A change in captaincy for OD is being discussed – Shubman Gill Frontner (soon an announcement)
– Team management had a word when the chief selector spoke to Virat and things could move quickly (the deadline given by Virat is two weeks away from here) AUS is now 50/50– Rohit Juglan (@rohitjuglan) 24 September, 2025
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma, who scored 76 runs in the final win over New Zealand in India’s Champions Trophy, is getting closer to the twilight of his brilliant career. The ODI side, like the test team, is preparing for the infection and fresh leadership period under Gill.
Rohit Sharma has been a successful captain in OD cricket
Rohit Sharma has been a highly successful captain in the ODI format. He also directed Team India in the final of the 2023 World Cup, but lost to Australia in Ahmedabad. While he has expressed his desire to play in the 2027 World Cup, questions have been raised about maintaining fitness.
The selector is considering passing the ODI captaincy to Shubman Gill. Gills will be 28 by the time of 2027 World Cup. They will get enough time to create a core team, implement strategies and establish their leadership.
This change is more than a simple change in captaincy. It is a generational transition in Indian cricket. After the pattern of the previous handover, Dhoni from Ganguly, and Dhoni to Kohli, Gill is now ready to lead the next era of Indian cricket.
