Shubman Gill played an effective role with the bat and provided Gujarat Titans early momentum in their batting innings as the captain looked to be on a mission while chasing the comparatively small target.
Gujarat Titans are being led by Shubman Gill from 2024 after Hardik Pandya left the team to return to his former franchise Mumbai Indians. It hasn’t been a good season for the batsman as Gujarat Titans, two-time finalists since his debut, missed out on a place in the playoffs in 2024 under Gill’s captaincy.
However, they bounced back in 2025 and made their way into the eliminator before being ousted by former captain Hardik Pandya’s Mumbai Indians. This season too, Gill will be looking to cement his place in the Indian T20I XI with impressive performances in the IPL.
Shubman Gill backed his bowlers to counter-attack against RCB batsmen in the powerplay
Gujarat Titans bowlers did not have a good start to the innings; However, ever since Kagiso Rabada has found form, wickets have fallen in the powerplay.
Mohammed Siraj was handed his third over due to an economical start in the powerplay; However, Gill took the bold step of supporting Rabada for the second over from the same end against Virat Kohli in the powerplay. The experienced fast bowler did not disappoint on this occasion too and dismissed Kohli with a stunning bumper.
He then bowled consecutive overs from one end to support Arshad Khan, who was the leading wicket-taker for Gujarat Titans after being supported by some brilliant fielding from the likes of Jason Holder and Sai Sudarshan.
From Rajat Patidar to Jos Buttler, everyone is praising Shubman Gill’s match-winning innings.
From opposition captain Rajat Patidar to his batting partner Jos Buttler, everyone on the ground is praising Shubman Gill for his brilliant start to the GT innings on such a difficult surface against two of the most lethal bowlers in the powerplay in this edition of the IPL.
Shubman, aiming to outclass the RCB bowlers from the very first over of the game, got GT off to a flyer when he opened his innings against Bhuvneshwar Kumar in some style after getting lucky on the first ball.
Gill didn’t stop there and scored 24 runs in Josh Hazlewood’s first over, even surpassing Virat Kohli’s 21 runs in his second over against Kagiso Rabada. Even after his dismissal, the momentum did not end and Jos Buttler kept adding runs from the other end.
Today the energy was very high – Shubhman Gill
Shubman Gill credited his GT boys for their stellar efforts on the field. He said, “I feel very satisfied. It is very good to restrict a team like them to 155 runs on such a wicket. Many times we did not field that well, but today the energy was very high after the second over.”
Gill said of his batting, “I was just feeling I was in the zone. The first ball, I got a bit lucky and then I thought today was my day. I was confident about bowling.”
He cited the importance of Rahul Tewatia in the GT XI, saying, “He is a very important player for us. That was one of our conversations in the timeout. He made some good runs and got everyone’s hits in the middle.”
