India started the second day’s play at 37/1 with KL Rahul (13) and Washington Sundar (6) at the crease. The batsmen negotiated the South African attack in the opening hour. However, Simon Harmer gave his team the breakthrough by dismissing Washington Sundar for 29 runs in his first over of the day.
WATCH: Shubman Gill retires due to injury on day two
Shubman Gill injured his neck while batting in India’s first innings. The incident occurred when he hit a four off Simon Harmer with a sweep shot at backward square leg. After playing the shot, Gill was seen holding the left side of his neck due to discomfort.
The team physio reached the field to assess the situation. Unable to move his neck properly, Gill decided to go back to the dressing room. Rishabh Pant, who was returning after injury, was warmly welcomed by the audience.
The Indian camp will be hoping that the injury is not serious and Gill can resume his innings later in the match, as his absence will be a big blow to the batting.
