Veteran cricketer Sunil Gavaskar supported the appointment of Shubman Gill as the vice-captain of Team India for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, which is scheduled to begin in Dubai on 9 September. Experienced commentator said that Shubman Gill could become the all format captain of Team India in the near future.
Shubman was nominated as the vice-captain under captain Suryakumar Yadav, who criticized and debated. BCCI decided to return Gill despite the disputes around the inclusion of the player. In particular, left-handed batsman Yashsvi Jaiswal was not included in the 15-member squad for the tournament.

Shubman recently led the National Cricket Team in the England Test series, scoring 754 runs in five matches on an average of over 75, including four centuries. In particular, he has been a regular player for India in Odis over the last three years.

Shubman ended the Anderson-Tendulkar series as the top run-scorer. Sunil Gavaskar said that Gill acted under pressure, saying that he could become the future captain of India in all three formats.

The 2025 Asia Cup is scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates from 8 September to 28 September. Eight teams will compete in the tournament, in which India will enter as a defending champion.
Shubman Gill last represented India in a T20I in 2024
Shubman Gill last played T20I in 2024 after the T20 World Cup. He recently succeeded Rohit Sharma as India’s Test captain and also served as the vice-captain in Odis. The batsman has experience with Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL.
Gill’s sub-captaincy became the most discussed decision as India announced its 15-member Asia Cup squad. In 2024, India’s T20 World Cup winning squad was part of the squad, Yashasvi Jaiswal was released from the main squad, but the five -member standby was included in the list.
Jitesh Sharma was selected as one of India’s two wicketkeeper-bits, while with Sanju Samson, while Rinku Singh secured one place. Shreyas Iyer, who was not included in the main squad or standby list, was one of remarkable exclusion.
