Robin Uthappa feels that Shubman Gill has been given a superstar privilege and included in the Asia Cup 2025 squad, despite India’s selectors knowing that it will create an issue.

Ahead of Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, Rohit Sharma was appointed as India Test captain after Rohit Sharma retired from Red-Ball cricket.
Gill did a good job in his first term as a Test captain and helped India attract the series 2–2, scored 754 runs, an average 75.40.
After the series, Gill returned to India’s T20I squad for the Asia Cup 2025 and was named as the vice-captain, replacing Exer Patel in the role.
Shubman Gill is part of India’s leadership group in formats, and allegedly, he is soon being designed to become an all-format captain, who is replacing Rohit Sharma to rudder in Odis and Suryakumar Yadav in T20.
You want some superstar to take the game forward – Robin Uthappa
Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Robin Uthappa said that Shubman Gill emerged as a superstar that India would fully support the tradition of superstar carrying Indian cricket. He explained in detail:
“He has created an issue for himself by bringing Shubman in this entire process of involving him in T20 cricket. But I think from the perspective of an Indian cricket, in all kinds of ages, you always have a superstar and have supported a special player for the sake of Indian cricket, and I feel that the story is now followed.
“I think marketing and business stories also take predicts, and I think it is also a part, that is why it is also brought. You want some superstar to take the game forward. Shubman is going to be one of them.”
In the Kerala League, he initially batted in mid -order as a finisher – Robin Uthappa
Due to returning to the T20I team with Shubman Gill and being nominated by vice-captains, he is very prone to opening with Abhishek Sharma, which means that Sanju Samson will either be dropped or batted in the middle order where he has not been very successful. Talking about this, Robin Uthappa said:
“Hard calls. In the Kerala League, he initially batted in the middle order as a finisher. It is not easy to work. You cannot do it at the age that is on Sanju. You should have gone on that road five years ago.
“A lot of Indian batsmen score a lot of runs, but they do not understand that the opportunities they can get at the top are very low and away and in the middle. They can be a opener and can score a lot of runs. But the opportunity is not going to be much at high levels.”
