Former India’s national cricket team spin bowler Murali Karthik was not at all impressed with the leadership of Shubman Gill in his debut match as a Test captain.
Murali Karthik said that Shubman Gill could not take the command of the team properly and Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, as well as Rishabh Pant had to intervene several times, which seems that there were ‘many captains’ in the Indian test team.

Shubman Gill lost his first Test match as skipper
After Rohit Sharma’s test retirement, Shubman Gill was elected as his successor by the BCCI selection committee, and became the 37th captain of the Indian testing team.
Gill made his debut as a Test captain in a series-ups of the England National Cricket Team in Headingly in Leeds and became the fifth youngest player in Captain India in the longest format of the game in 25 years and 285 days.
The youngest Indian Test captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi (21 years, 77 days), Sachin Tendulkar (23 years, 169 days), Kapil Dev (24 years, 48 days), and Ravi Shastri (25 years, 229 days) are made.
Gill impressed with the bat in his first innings as a Test captain as he slammed his fastest Test fifty, reaching milestones in just 56 balls.
He then converted it into a big score, with a finish with 147 runs with 227 balls and a finish with 1 six. Shubman Gill became the 33rd player to score the Test Captain Debut and the fifth Indian.
His batting was highly impressive, but the same thing he cannot say about his leadership. He came under a scanner for his defensive approach, and many times senior opener KL Rahul and vice-captain Rishabh Pant were seen as shots.
On 5 days, Rahul was mostly seen speaking in the Handle and the ground was established. Eventually, nothing worked as England won the match by 5 wickets in Leeds.

Speaking after the match, Murali Karthik said that he was confused that Shubman was actually in charge of Gill’s first game as a skipper.
“We can seek excuses, but the problem is that we scored 835 runs, a bowler took five wickets and despite that India lost the game by five wickets. I felt as if there were many captains. I could not understand.
“Sometimes KL Rahul was suggesting things, Rishabh Pant was suggesting things, Shubman Gill was also doing so, who is the real appointed captain. I could not understand that these signs are being made. There is a captain,” Karthik said on cricbaz.
“I think if a senior player sees someone out of place once or twice, then they suggest but it is repeatedly happening which is not a good sign,” he said.

Murali Karthik further said that Shubman Gill came under tremendous pressure when the bowlers were unable to achieve success while defending 371.
“It was seen at a point as Gills were feeling pressure. He was keeping the fielders wherever the ball went. It is not as easy to stamp his authority as a captain.
He said, “You did it with your batting, but when your bowlers do not perform it becomes very difficult and it was clear. 371 runs are too many runs. It was never seen that any wicket was about to fall in the first session,” he said.
