Shubman Gill is facing a tough challenge as Rinku Singh and Washington Sundar compete for a place in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

Some of India’s players are set to get big rewards, while some are expecting heartbreak, as the senior selection committee is scheduled to meet on Saturday (December 20) afternoon to finalize the squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Shubman Gill’s position in the T20I team is in serious danger after consistently poor performances.

Shocking changes are not expected by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee, but some important names are expected to be discussed before the final squad is announced for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026. India already have an established team in the format.

Shubman Gill’s ICC T20 World Cup 2026 spot in danger

The team has been winning consecutive T20 series since Suryakumar Yadav became the captain, so the core group is expected to remain unchanged for next year’s mega event. However, Gill, Washington Sundar and Rinku Singh will be part of the major discussions in the meeting.

Only a few changes are expected to India’s T20I squad for the upcoming showpiece event at home and in Sri Lanka, reports Indian Express. Gill’s recent form has become the main concern for the selectors. He was promoted to open the batting alongside Abhishek Sharma.

The move pushed Sanju Samson, who had been aggressive as an opening batsman, down the order and Gill struggled to make the same impact from that position. Since returning to the T20 setup in September, the Indian captain’s highest score in 15 innings has been 47.

Selection committee may give last chance to Shubman Gill

Since the Australia tour, Gill has recorded scores of 37 not out, 5, 15, 46, 29 not out, 4, 0 and 8 – figures that have raised concerns, while Suryakumar has also struggled, making things difficult for the selectors. After Gill comes under the scanner, other options are also being discussed.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is waiting for his chance, while Ishan Kishan has strongly staked his claim by scoring a century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025. The report states that there is a view among the selectors that Gill’s poor start gives too much responsibility to Abhishek to attack early.

He feels that having a more aggressive opening batsman like Jaiswal or Ishan can help the Men in Blue make better use of the powerplay. Nevertheless, Gill is likely to be given more time, as there are five more T20 matches to be played against New Zealand before the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

Despite the poor form of this Punjab player, the selectors are not keen on making any late changes. He also believes it would be unfair to drop him so close to the tournament, especially when he has been part of the long-term plans.

India selectors face crucial decision as Rinku Singh vs Washington Sundar

The selectors will also discuss the Rinku Singh vs Washington Sundar debate. If the selectors decide to stick with the Asia Cup 2026 squad, they will have to choose between Rinku Singh and Washington Sundar. Rinku was recently left out of the five-match T20I series against South Africa, with Washington preferring her because of her all-round abilities.

If the team goes with an additional specialist batsman, Rinku could come in as cover, especially if Gill and Suryakumar struggle with the bat. It is also being said that three spinners and one additional batsman can be selected for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

If the selectors believe that Hardik Pandya and Jitesh Sharma can play the final role, then Washington’s inclusion is almost certain as the conditions will suit him and he provides a better balance, leaving Rinku out of the picture.

Pace attack confirmed for ICC T20 World Cup 2026

On the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana are set to lead the pace attack, while Pandya and Dubey will provide all-round strength. The team is also expected to stick with two wicketkeepers, backing up Samson and Jitesh for the T20 World Cup.
