Indian captain Shubman Gill has reached another three-figure score in the longest format of the game. This is Gill’s tenth Test century, the most by any Indian cricketer in World Test Championship history, and his fifth century in 7 Tests since becoming the captain of the Indian team.
India dominate West Indies on home soil at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi with Shubman Gill leading from the front. Although initially being held responsible for being the root cause of Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal this morning, Gill remained composed and completed his tenth Test century.
Before declaring the innings, India scored a huge score of 518 runs at the loss of 5 wickets in their innings. The previous game’s centurion Dhruv Jurel was dismissed by the West Indies captain for 44 and the Indians looked to wrap it up, with Shubman Gill finishing unbeaten on 129*.
Shubman Gill creates WTC history for India with historic century
Yashasvi Jaiswal dominated the first day of the second Test as he scored a mammoth 173 runs on home soil and won a lot of praise for his brilliant innings which wore down the West Indies bowlers. Shubman Gill had just started his innings during the last session of the first day.
However, after Jaiswal was run out early, it was Gill who took charge of the Indian innings on the second day and scored a brilliant century, partnering Nitish Kumar Reddy and Dhruv Jurel. Both batsmen missed their half-centuries after being out on the score of 40.
This century is Shubman Gill’s 5th century as the captain of the Indian team and it has come in a span of just 7 Test matches. With his 10th Test century, Shubman has now overtaken former captain Rohit Sharma (9 centuries) to score the most Test centuries in the history of the ICC World Test Championship, which began in 2019.
Gill equals Virat Kohli in a unique captaincy record
Along with defeating the former captain, Shubman Gill has also registered his name in the list of greats. He has now equaled Virat Kohli’s record of most centuries for India in a year as Test captain.
Kohli had earlier scored 5 centuries each as India’s Test captain in 2017 and 2018, playing 16 and 24 innings respectively. Gill has also reached 5 centuries in just 12 innings and he is yet to play a Test series against South Africa this year.
Shubman Gill almost overtook Sunil Gavaskar’s long-standing record for most runs by an Indian captain on English soil; However, he missed it a bit. This time too, he is behind only Sunil Gavaskar in the list of Indian captains who have scored 5 Test centuries in the least number of innings.
While Gavaskar achieved this record in just 10 innings, Gill overtook Virat Kohli, who reached the same feat in 18 Test innings.
Fans praised Shubman Gill a lot
Shubman Gill is now behind experienced No. 4 batsmen Joe Root, Steve Smith and Angelo Mathews in terms of scoring most centuries at No. 4 this decade. And unlike him, he had started batting at this venue only a few months ago… pic.twitter.com/PTpRn5W07e

When it comes to batting on flat pitches, Shubman Gill is currently the best batsman in this modern era. On flat pitches this man is as dangerous as any other player who has played the game. Well played . Give this man flat pitches to bat on and he will break every record of Sachin Tendulkar. pic.twitter.com/MDX00dDqom
