Chennai Super Kings (CSK) reportedly plan to buy star Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction, which is likely to take place in December.
However, Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans (GT) rejected their trade proposal, which is an early blow for the Chennai-based franchise.
The five-time champions are eyeing Sundar as a possible replacement for their senior all-rounders for the next season.
With Ravichandran Ashwin retiring and Ravindra Jadeja involved in an ongoing trade deal with Rajasthan Royals (RR), the Super Kings have only a few frontline spinners left in their team.
Washington Sundar’s records in Indian Premier League
Washington Sundar made his IPL debut for defunct Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) in 2017. He has taken 39 wickets in 66 matches at an economy rate of 7.69. This all-rounder has scored 511 runs at an average of 15.5 and strike rate of 126.17.
Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans acquired his services for ₹3.2 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction. Sundar scored 133 runs in six matches at a strike rate of 166.25 and took just two wickets at an economy rate of 10.24.
The Chennai-born off-spinner took eight wickets in 11 matches at an economy rate of 6.16 during his debut season. Subsequently, he represented Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) from 2018 to 2021 and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) between 2022 and 2024, before moving to Gujarat Titans.
Chennai Super Kings facing spin dilemma ahead of IPL 2026
According to ESPNcricinfo, Chennai Super Kings are ready to trade Sanju Samson for Rajasthan Royals in exchange for Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran ahead of the November 15 retention deadline.
In such a scenario, Chennai will face a shortage of quality spinners, with only Noor Ahmed and Shreyas Iyer left as frontline options. Rachin Ravindra’s inclusion will also depend on whether the franchise decides to retain him or not.
Given Chepauk’s traditionally spin-friendly conditions, CSK have relied on quality spinners like Imran Tahir, Moeen Ali and Harbhajan Singh. However, Jadeja’s departure may put the five-time champion team in a difficult situation before the IPL 2026 auction.
Chennai Super Kings refuse to trade Washington Sundar for Shubman Gill
Speaking on his YouTube channel, RevSportz’s Rohit Juglan revealed that Gujarat Titans turned down two trade offers from Chennai Super Kings. The Shubman Gill-led side rejected a player-for-player swap and an all-cash offer.

CSK has approached Gujarat Titans twice for Washington Sundar.

Sundar was last seen in action during the five-match T20 series against Australia. He scored unbeaten 49 runs off 23 balls and took 3 wickets for just 3 runs in the third and fourth T20Is. The off-spinning all-rounder has scored 1,489 runs and taken 118 wickets in 158 T20 matches.
