Shubman Gill was initially a part of India’s ICC T20 World Cup 2026 squad, but a last-minute decision left him out of the overall T20I plans. Shubman Gill was dropped from India’s T20 squad due to poor performances since his return to the team in September after more than a year.
According to a report by a Dainik Jagran journalist, Gill was originally a part of India’s ICC T20 World Cup 2026 squad as the team management strongly supported him, but some selectors were against his inclusion in the final stages, and this led to his surprise omission from the squad.
Shubman Gill surprisingly left out of India’s ICC T20 World Cup 2026 squad at the last minute
In fact, much before the official announcement of the team, the Indian cricket team management had prepared a clear plan for the probable players in the upcoming five-match T20 series against New Zealand and the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

The plan was shared with the BCCI through an internal email during the recent T20 series against South Africa. The plan included appropriate rest and training windows for selected players so that player workload could be carefully managed while keeping everyone match-ready for important games.
They were to be given a structured break from matches, after which individual training sessions were to be conducted based on individual needs. Additionally, skill improvement and strength and conditioning were also part of the program with the aim of keeping players physically fresh and reducing the risk of injuries during the busy international calendar.
India’s smart T20 World Cup preparation strategy
The idea was to strike the right balance between rest and preparation so that players can perform at their best when it matters most. The team management believed that this approach would help the players remain strong not only for the T20I series against New Zealand, but also for the T20 World Cup.
As part of the programme, 14 players were identified, including Suryakumar Yadav, Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Verma, Shivam Dubey, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar. Apart from them, Akshar Patel, Sanju Samson, Jitesh Sharma, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana and Varun Chakraborty were also included in those selected players.

However, Jasprit Bumrah was not included, as he is already following a different and carefully planned fitness and workload program, as reported by the journalist.
Role of selectors in neglecting Shubman Gill
The inclusion of Shubman Gill in this internal plan clearly shows that he was expected to be a part of the T20 World Cup team. Unfortunately, things turned and went against Gill during the final selection meeting at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai.
Some selectors were not in favor of the right-handed batsman’s selection, and despite being part of the previous plans, he was ultimately dropped from the team at the last moment. Not only this, Shubman Gill could not play in the last T20 match against South Africa due to a minor injury.
Reports revealed that the injury was not very serious, but the team management chose to avoid taking any risks with him as he was set to be a part of the T20 World Cup squad.
