The Control Board for Cricket in India (BCCI) Selection Committee is set to finalize India’s T20I squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 in the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, August 18. Shubman Gill has some conversations on the future, some support their selection, while others do not want to disturb the line-up.
Shubman Gill scored an average of 754 runs with four centuries during the tour of England. After his brilliant performance, he expected to join the Asia Cup. There was speculation that he could also take India’s T20 captaincy, especially with concerns on Suryakumar Yadav’s fitness.
Shubman Gill Asia Cup is unlikely to be facilitated in 2025
According to the Times of India, Shubman Gill’s position is uncertain for the Asia Cup. The selectors are not fully convinced about their readiness for the T20 format.

“Gill is a terrible batsman, all the selector and head coach Gautam Gambhir is a great fan of his batting, and he has been given almost high status as Virat Kohli in the circle of India’s cricket in terms of capacity. However, he is not yet fit in T20 schemes” A BCCI source told TOI.
“Currently, this idea is to stay as openers with Keeper-Bat Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Verma is coming to number 3 and Skipper Suryakumar at number 4.
Shubman Gill in Fine Form but Asia Cup spot is not guaranteed
Shubman Gill’s form in short format is not a matter of concern. He scored 650 runs in 15 matches at an average of 50.00 and 155.88 strike rates, including 6 half -centuries during IPL 2025. The Gujarat Titans (GT) captain would not have still done enough to guarantee himself a T20I spot.
Openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have been extraordinary. Samson broke three centuries for India last year, while Abhishek recently reached the No.1 ICC T20I batter rankings. Sharma scored 135 runs from 54 balls against England earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Tilak Verma has strengthened its place at number 3 with back-to-back centuries against South Africa. With India’s top order firing, Gill will have to wait for the opportunity.
India to kick Asia Cup 2025 against UAE on 10 September
India will launch its Asia Cup 2025 campaign against UAE on 10 September. The much awaited match against Pakistan will be held on 14 September at the same place. The tournament will end with the final in Dubai on 28 September.
Shreyas Iyer’s location in the squad is uncertain despite being in good form. The middle-order batsman took Punjab Kings (PBK) to the IPL 2025 final. Iyer was India’s leading run-goldter during the Champions Trophy victory earlier this year, who scored 243 runs in five matches.
Jasprit Bumrah has confirmed his availability for the Asia Cup. Pace Spearhead may remember the start of India’s home Test series against the West Indies starting from October 2. Meanwhile, Mohammad Siraj cannot be included in the Asia Cup team.
