After Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill has established himself as a potentially influential figure in the near future. If Gill’s progress continues, then in the near future, the top-order batsman could spread his wings further across all three formats as captain.

Amidst the ongoing speculation over Rohit Sharma’s future, an interesting conversation has claimed that Shubman Gill is likely to be the next superstar of the Indian national cricket team across all formats. This means Gill, who currently represents the team in Tests and ODIs, can also play in T20Is.

Indian team management showed great confidence in Shubman Gill

There is no doubt that the Indian team management and selectors have great confidence in the Punjab-born player as he replaces Rohit Sharma for the leadership role in Tests and ODIs. During an online interaction hosted by Ray Sports, it was claimed that Shubman will emerge as the next big thing for Indian cricket and his career graph is expected to rise in the coming days.

Whereas after a few years, growth may be visible significantly by 2028. The year 2028 will be important for Indian cricket, as it will be the year when two major sporting events, the ICC T20 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics, will take place. Both the tournaments will be in T20 format.

Shreyas Iyer needs to prove himself as T20I captain for India

At the moment, Shreyas Iyer is leading the India national cricket team in the shortest format of the game, which may change in the future if the results do not live up to the expectation levels. With Shreyas Iyer captaining India’s T20I team, the Men in Blue are yet to register their first win as they have suffered 6 consecutive defeats in 7 matches.

Of the seven matches, two against Ireland and five against England, India had to have two T20 matches against the Ireland national cricket team, four against England, and one against the Three Lions abandoned due to rain. Iyer joins the team as captain replacing 2026 T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav, who as a leader guided the team to 42 wins and 8 losses in just 52 matches, taking their win percentage to almost 82%.

It will not be easy for Iyer to equal this figure, as he has already suffered six defeats in six matches. As reported earlier, Shreyas Iyer was not the only one who was in the race to become Suryakumar Yadav’s successor. Shubman Gill and Sanju Samson were the other two contenders who were reportedly strongly considered to replace Yadav.

Shubman Gill can replace Shreyas Iyer in T-20 format

However, in the end only Shreyas Iyer got the chance. If the results are not as per expectations then how long will he continue in this post? After this, this doubt remains after the T20Is against Ireland and England.

During the online conversation, where a group of journalists participated in the panel, tall claims were made on Shubman Gill’s future with the India national cricket team. PTI journalist Kushan Sarkar claims that Shubman Gill will become one of the most influential captains in Indian cricket and as he becomes more mature, can match the heights of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as a captain.

Kushan also mentioned in a bold claim that if Gill continues to perform well, there will be a possibility of seeing Shubman Gill leading the national team in the 2028 T20 World Cup and 2028 LA Olympics.
