Former Indian batsman and commentator Wasim Jafar has shared his views on India’s T20I setup before the Asia Cup 2025, especially as Captain Suryakumar Yadav and the growing appearance of Vice-Captain Shubman Gill.
Wasim Jaffer believes that Suryakumar Yadav’s position is not in danger despite the rapid growth of Shubman Gill as India’s T20I captain, but his incompatibility with the bat, while leading the side is a real concern, and they should address that things will slip from their hands.
Wasim Jafar expressed concern over Suryakumar Yadav’s form ahead of Asia Cup 2025
Since taking over as India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav has scored only 558 runs in 22 T20I. The number is below expectations for a caliber player, especially worrying with his final series against England, where he scored just 28 runs at a bad average of 5.60 and an average of two ducks.

The commentator has reported that Suryakumar had become more dependent on his leg-side game and was not making most of the scoring opportunities on offside.
Wasim Jafar was quoted by the Times of India, saying, “Leaving their number (while leading India) is a matter of concern. Their runs are not being found. There is a concern. He played in the last few internationals, he was mostly trying to score behind the square on the leg side. His shot was not even a selection mark.”
Wasim Jafar hopes that Suryakumar Yadav will silence his doubt
However, the change of the right -handed batsman in IPL 2025 offered some encouragement as he started finding runs on the ground again, but he needs to prove himself in the Asia Cup 2025.
Jaffer further said, “But he has worked on his game since then, and as we saw, he was a completely different player in the IPL. He also started scoring on offside. When Surya plays shots around the wicket, the bowlers are not very dangerous. He is not very dangerous. Then there is no margin for bowlers.
Wasim Jafar says that Shubman Gill’s appointment is not a threat to Suryakumar Yadav
On the other hand, Shubman Gill’s height as Vice-Captain has been seen as a sign of faith in their leadership ability. The 26 -year -old, who lead India in tests, continue to strengthen their reputation and a cool appearance at the top as captain with large performances.

But Jafar insisted that Gill being as the vice-captain does not mean that the captain is under pressure, but it reflects the long-term vision of the selectors for large responsibilities, as Jasprit Bumrah is being managed carefully and Hardik Pandya is not currently in the picture.
He signed, saying, “Every tour, every series, you have a vice-captain. It does not mean that the captain is in danger. The selectors have made it clear-not to play every chain-so he is out. Hardik? He is not looking at him for now. He is not looking at him for now.
However, former England spinner Monty Panesar said that Indian selectors can move beyond Suryakumar and hand over the captaincy of the white ball to Gill if he does not perform well or fails to win the 2025 Asia Cup. He also predicted that Gill would be India’s all format captain after Rohit Sharma retired.
