The M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru hosted the 34th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 between Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans and Rajat Patidar-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Friday, April 24.
Virat Kohli shines after Gujarat Titans’ defeat to RCB
In the match, Gujarat Titans lost the toss and were invited to bat first. Sai Sudarshan gave a great start to his team and displayed a batting masterclass.
Since Sai was performing brilliantly, Gill at the non-striker’s end was just waiting to get the strike, and even when he got the chance, he was unable to take advantage of it.
Gujarat Titans’ openers put up a solid partnership of 128 runs in 76 balls, with Sai Sudarshan contributing 92 runs while Gill contributed 32 runs.
Eventually, Gujarat Titans scored 205/3 on the board, which was never going to be enough. Chasing the target, Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal scored brilliant half-centuries and helped RCB win by 5 wickets.

I mean, when a batsman drops or not, it is always difficult for the fielder – Shubman Gill

Speaking after the defeat, Shubman Gill expressed disappointment at his team’s failure to score good runs in the death overs. Shubman Gill said:
“Yes, definitely, I think, from 16 to 19 overs, in those three overs, we couldn’t hit any boundaries and we didn’t get as many runs as we wanted. I think those three overs were very important for us. I mean, at the end of the powerplay, I think we were in a good position. It was all about taking wickets in the middle overs, which I think we weren’t able to do once the powerplay was over.
Virat Kohli was lucky as Gujarat Titans bowled him out for 0. When asked about this blunder, Shubman Gill said:
“I mean, when a batsman is out or not, it’s always tough for the fielder, but I think it’s important how you get back into the game. And with the ball, I think we had some moments, but I don’t think we were able to hit the length ball consistently, which is sometimes difficult to hit on this wicket. You know, a few balls here and there, and I think he batted brilliantly in the middle overs. Of.”
Hopefully he will give me a little more strike in the powerplay – Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill also spoke about his call to take chances with spinner Manav Suthar, who conceded 19 runs in his two overs while dismissing Rajat Patidar. He said:
“When we were batting, the balls that were there, when I was batting, the balls that Krunal bowled slower were having a bit of grip. So, we thought we should take a chance. They are very much ahead of the game. If we get a few wickets in this over, we can get back into the game.”
In the end, Shubman Gill was full of praise for Sai Sudarshan but also took a sharp dig at him while demanding more strikes in the powerplay. He said:
“Yeah, I mean he was quite disappointed with his performance in the last few matches. But I think he covered well. But hopefully in the next match he will give me a little more strike in the powerplay.”
