India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is under close medical observation at a Sydney hospital after suffering a serious injury during the third ODI against Australia. Shreyas Iyer is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after suffering internal bleeding due to a hard fall while fielding.
Iyer suffered a deep injury to his left lower rib, with scans later confirming that he had suffered a laceration to his spleen. Although the Mumbaikar’s condition is said to be medically stable, doctors have decided to keep him in the ICU for at least the next two days.

BCCI makes travel arrangements for Shreyas Iyer’s family amid crucial 48-hour phase
Meanwhile, BCCI is making arrangements for a member of Iyer’s family to travel to Sydney immediately. While his sister was initially expected to travel, there is a possibility that one of his parents could stay with the cricketer in Sydney during his recovery.
“Arrangements are being made by the BCCI. As of now, it is not clear whether both parents will go or not, but someone will be accompanying her at the hospital as soon as possible,” The Times of India quoted a source close to the development as saying.
As of yesterday, Iyer’s sister was to travel to Australia, and even the paperwork has started, but it is also possible that one of the parents will accompany her.

BCCI issued update on Shreyas Iyer’s injury
On the other hand, BCCI has confirmed that Iyer is undergoing continuous treatment and is recovering under the supervision of experts.
“Shreyas Iyer suffered an injury to the left lower rib area while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, 2025. He was taken to hospital for further evaluation,” the BCCI said in an official statement.
Notably, Iyer could only score 72 runs in his two innings and India lost the three-match ODI series to Australia 1–2. However, the right-handed batsman is not part of India’s squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against Australia starting from October 29 at the Manuka Oval in Canberra.
