He has suffered an injury to his lower left rib and according to the BCCI, he has received a spleen injuryThe BCCI medical team, as well as Sydney experts, are closely monitoring his injury situation, and he is medically stable and recovering well. The team doctor is staying with Iyer in Sydney to evaluate his day-to-day progress.

BCCI said, “Shreyas Iyer suffered an injury to the left lower rib area while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans revealed injury to the spleen.”

“He is undergoing treatment, is medically stable and is recovering well. The BCCI medical team is closely monitoring his injury situation in consultation with experts in Sydney and India. The Indian team doctor will be in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.”

Recovery period may increase after wound injury

Earlier, it was revealed that the scans had shown no fractures, and hence, Shreyas Iyer’s recovery schedule was believed to be around 3 weeks, with a possible return before the South Africa series starting on 30 November.

However, Shreyas, who has played only ODI cricket so far, has now been reported to have suffered a spleen injury and hence, the possible date of his recovery may be pushed back.

A source revealed to NDTV, “Since there has been internal bleeding, he will definitely need more time to recover, and at this time, it is difficult to set a definite timeline for his return to competitive cricket.”

Shreyas Iyer plays for Mumbai in the domestic tournament and has also played for Delhi Capitals in the IPL in the past. Hence Iyer shared the dressing room with Indian youngster Prithvi Shaw throughout his career.
