The Control Board for Cricket in India (BCCI) has released an official statement about middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer who is taking a break from Red-Ball cricket. In particular, the board confirmed that the Mumbai batter did not take an indefinite break from the red-ball cricket and would return to the format after six months.
Iyer has been appointed as a squad for an ODI series, captain of India, in which Tilak Verma is serving as his deputy. However, the right -handed batsman will not participate in the Iranian Cup between the rest of India and Vidarbha. Earlier this week, Iyer withdrew from another informal test against Australia A.
Shreyas Iyer informed BCCI’s decision to take a six -month break
On Thursday, 25 September, the BCCI confirmed that Shreyas would take a six-month break from red-ball cricket due to cramps and rigor. Iyer has recently faced fitness issues playing long format, forcing him to take a temporary break.
BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia said in a statement on Thursday morning, “Mr. Shreyas Iyer has informed the BCCI about his decision to take a six-month break from Red-Ball Cricket. Shreyas Iyer wants to use this period to improve fitness

Iyer has not played Test cricket since February 2024. The 30 -year -old batsman has so far represented India in 14 tests, scoring 811 runs at an average of 36.86, including a century and five fifty. He recorded his career-win score 105 in debut against New Zealand in 2021.
Shreyas Iyer will recall the upcoming test series against West Indies at home
Shreyas Iyer was appointed Captain A of India for two informal home tests against Australia A. However, he withdrew from the second match due to back pain.
With a six-month break from Red-Ball cricket, he will miss the selection for the upcoming Indian test series against the West Indies in October and the two-match series against South Africa in November.
After Karun Nair, who portrayed the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy against England, Iyer was expected to return to the West Indies Test, which was struggling to make an impact.
The right-handed batsman experienced inconvenience for the first time during the fourth test of the 2023 border-Gavaskar series, with months away from cricket, including the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 season for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
