Former Indian batsman Mohammad Kaif advised Shreyas Iyer to stick with the Indian team as he consoled him by saying that a T20 national call-up is around the corner. Shreyas Iyer has currently been selected only in the ODI format.
Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer captained Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024 and led them to their third title; Then he was bought by Punjab Kings for a huge price of Rs 26.75 crore. Shreyas led Punjab Kings to their second IPL final after 11 years since 2014, when they lost the final.
Shreyas himself scored 600+ runs in the 2025 edition of IPL; However, despite his stellar performances, he was not selected in India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025 and was also not given a chance to feature in the five-match T20I series against Australia.
Shreyas Iyer told to “hang in there” by a former Indian batsman
Iyer emerged as India’s most promising batsman across all white-ball formats, and it is unclear why he finds himself out of favor when it comes to the shortest format of the game. He was recently named in the ODI squad for the Australian tour, but has not been named in the T20 squad yet.
Former Indian batsman Mohammad Kaif has once again drawn everyone’s attention towards the Punjab Kings captain by mentioning his class in all formats. He mentioned how Iyer started his Test career with a century on debut and started his amazing campaign for India in the 2023 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy.

It was great to meet Shreyas Iyer. What a player. Century on Test debut, 2023 ODI World Cup hero, only captain to take 3 IPL teams to the final. T20 National call will also come, stay strong, a great future is waiting for you Shreyas.@shreyasiyar15 pic.twitter.com/53LMWEF8SE

Shreyas Iyer appointed Shubman Gill as his deputy for Australia tour
For the upcoming series against Australia, one cannot ignore the fact that he has once again not been given a chance in the Indian T20I team; However, the good news is that Iyer has been announced as Shubman Gill’s deputy in the ODI squad.
The new Indian ODI vice-captain recently captained India A in the 3-match unofficial ODI series against Australia A. Iyer had also scored a brilliant century with Priyansh Arya in the very first match.
India’s next T20I series will be against World Cup runners-up South Africa at home in late December. Shreyas Iyer is eyeing a place in the team for the domestic matches to be held later this year.
Shreyas had distanced himself from the longest format of the game
Recently, last month, Shreyas Iyer had written a letter to the BCCI asking the board not to consider his name for selection in the longest format of the game. After Karun Nair’s rejection, Iyer was probably on the cards of the Indian selectors for a comeback into the Test team.
He was also named captain of the India A red-ball team that played against Australia A; However, the experienced batsman revealed that his body is not in a condition to take the load of five-day matches at the moment.
