Shreyas Iyer unhappy after India’s defeat: The India national cricket team faced the Ireland national cricket team in the second and final T20 match at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Stormont, Belfast, Ireland. Lorcan Tucker’s team came into the match having defeated India for the first time across all formats after creating history in the first game. Tucker’s team created history, defeating India by one run and winning the series 2–0.
Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to field first as India made two changes after their defeat, with two debutants, Suryansh Shedge and Prince Yadav, getting their first T20I caps, but the much-awaited debut of Vaibhav Suryavanshi did not materialize as he had to wait for his senior team debut. Ireland played only its winning team in the first match.
Prince Yadav had a dream debut
After being asked to bat first, Ireland got off to a good start, but Harshit Rana got the breakthrough as he dismissed Tim Tector for just five runs. Arshdeep Singh picked out dangerous looking Ross Adair on 16. Tucker also did not cause much trouble and was out on 15 runs. Then, a solid partnership of Harry Tector and Ben Calitz scored 65 runs off 43 balls.
Calitz was back on 37, and Shivam Dubey took the wicket, and he also dismissed Gareth Delany for a golden duck. With two wickets falling, the rain intensified just before the final over of Ireland’s first innings. Harry Tector returned to the pavilion after scoring 53 runs and Ireland’s score was 154/8. Prince Yadav performed brilliantly in his debut match, taking three wickets for 22 runs in his four overs.
Shreyas Iyer once again failed with the bat
India had the worst start as they lost Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma in the very first over, with Jai Mundra taking a wicket in the very first over to put the visitors on the backfoot. Ishan Kishan is also back after a nasty altercation with vice-captain Tilak Verma. After this, Tilak and Akshar Patel made a small partnership of 39 runs.
Tilak Verma played a half-century innings of 56 runs and Shivam Dubey scored 20 runs. And Harshit Rana’s explosive innings of 21 runs kept the Men in Blue in the match, but Ireland created history by defeating India for the first time in a T20 series after three years. Shreyas Iyer also got out cheaply after scoring 10 runs.
“It’s definitely not a great series” – Shreyas Iyer after India’s defeat
Shreyas Iyer admitted that it was not a good series for India and credited Ireland for completely outclassing his team with better execution and understanding of the conditions. He believes that India’s bowlers performed well, but the batting unit failed to assess the pitch and rotate the strike.
“To be honest, it’s definitely not a great series, but congratulations to them for the way they played. The Ireland team, I think they showed professionalism and certainly they had a tremendous sense of how the wicket would play and the field work there was amazing. So a comprehensive win and congratulations to them.”
“[On whether his team showed the cricket smarts, learning and adaptability he had spoken about after the first game] Absolutely. I think the bowlers were amazing in terms of their performance today. But we lagged a little behind in our batting. We were, we were a little behind in terms of analyzing how the wicket would play and converting singles into twos.”
“He has his own set of ideas and plans”- Shreyas Iyer praises Prince Yadav
Shreyas Iyer also praised debutant Prince for taking his IPL confidence to international cricket and praised Suryansh’s attitude despite it being his first game, expressing confidence that the young player will learn from the experience.
“I think they definitely outshined us in that department. [On the debutants] Obviously, as I mentioned earlier, he (Prince) has got a lot of good experience in the IPL and he carries that momentum here as well. He has his own ideas and plans when it comes to the ball.”
Shreyas Iyer concluded, “But his and Suryansh’s attitude and approach, I mean it was his first game, but yes, he definitely learns from it outside the leg-stump. [Thank you for coming to Ireland and] thank you so much. It’s an honor and a pleasure to be here.”
