India vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of competitive cricket after suffering a serious injury during the final ODI in Sydney. According to a report in Dainik Jagran, Iyer is unlikely to recover before IPL 2026.
Shreyas Iyer moved from Kolkata Knight Riders to his new franchise Punjab Kings. The title-winning captain of Knight Riders led the Punjab team to its second final in the history of IPL. Apart from being their captain, he emerged as a brilliant batsman for them.
Shreyas was appointed India’s vice-captain in ODIs after Shubman Gill was appointed captain in the format. He entered the field for the first time as the vice-captain of India during India’s tour of Australia.

After starting his leadership career with the Australian tour, Shreyas was ruled out due to an injury sustained while fielding in Sydney when he dismissed Alex Carey with a brilliant catch.
After being ruled out due to injury, Shreyas, who was hospitalized in Sydney for weeks, was reported to be out of action for two months.
Dainik Jagran’s Abhishek Tripathi has now reported that Shreyas will be fit before the IPL 2026 edition. This is a huge blow for PBKS as their best batsman from last season will be entering the season with very little game time.
Shreyas is out of South Africa and New Zealand series
Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of taking part in the upcoming two series for India. One of them is currently in the ongoing series against South Africa.
Shreyas had already asked the BCCI to relieve him of red-ball duties due to ill health and a back injury.
A UCG test has been conducted on Shreyas’s injury, and he is likely to undergo scans, allowing his recovery to begin by late December or early January. This will automatically rule him out of the upcoming South Africa white-ball series and the New Zealand home series later this year.
Who will replace Shreyas Iyer in the Indian team?
Shreyas Iyer plays a very important role in the Indian team. The middle-order batsman has been sent at no. 4 and has scored as many runs since World Cup 2023.
Shreyas can be replaced by players like Rishabh Pant, who can make a comeback in the ODI team. Dhruv Jurel is also a contender with other players like Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson fighting for that one spot.
