While Iyer admitted that the defeat was disappointing, he insisted that the experience would serve as an important lesson for the relatively new-looking Indian team in adapting to unfamiliar conditions.

Leading India in a T20I for the first time, Iyer saw his team lose control despite making a great start with the ball. Ireland were reduced to 51/4 before a match-defining partnership between Gareth Delany and Lorcan Tucker brought the contest to its peak. Reflecting on the defeat, the Indian captain admitted that his team had to pay the price for loosening their grip at crucial moments.
“You can’t take anything for granted. You can’t just win the match. You have to work hard and see that you are in the moment. As I mentioned earlier, you have to be in the present and see that if you have a chance to squeeze the opponent, we have to do that. And yes, never take any moment or situation lightly.” Iyer said as quoted by Cricbuzz.
India’s fielding also hurt their chances, with three dropped catches giving Ireland’s key batsmen the chance to extend their innings. The bowlers, who had controlled the powerplay effectively, struggled to maintain the same discipline during the middle overs, repeatedly providing scoring opportunities on grounds where the boundaries were quite short. Assessing the performance of his bowling unit, Iyer acknowledged both positives and mistakes.
“I think initially, the bowlers were bowling well. They got lateral movement and got a few wickets as well. So we got a tremendous start, but in the middle we lost the execution. We got them hitting them straight down the ground where we know the dimensions are quite small. But then, yes, the bowlers, when we had to close down the overs, they were fantastic too. So I thought 140 would have been an amazing score considering the start we got.” Added Iyer.

With lessons learned, India turn their attention to the second T20I
Despite the disappointing start to the series, Iyer insisted that India must move forward rather than focus on setbacks. The captain admitted that some players looked weak but believed the experience of playing in the challenging conditions of Belfast would benefit the team going forward. He clarified that the dressing room is already waiting for the next match.
“Yeah, definitely. We’ll forget what happened. There’s definitely a lot to learn from this game and make sure we go into the next game with full strength.” Explained to the Mumbai batsman.
Iyer highlighted the positives of his first match as captain, saying that the team now has a better understanding of the surface and local conditions.
“It was a great experience here. We got a chance to play in these conditions, got a good knowledge of the wicket and yes, it was a great start as a captain.” Iyer further said.
