Shreyas Iyer’s poor form continues in the ongoing DY Patil T20 Cup 2026 tournament. The star middle-order batsman failed again during the BPCL vs Reliance match in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday, February 25. With a flop show from Iyer, BPCL lost the match by 65 runs.
Before the IPL 2026 season, Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer is struggling with his form. In the last match of the tournament, he was out on a golden duck against Bank of Baroda. In the next game, the batsman could score only 5 runs out of 13.
Shreyas Iyer out at crucial moment of run chase
In the second innings, BPCL had to chase a huge target of 200 runs and for that tough task they needed the support of their experienced batsman. Because of his height, there were a lot of expectations on Iyer’s shoulders. Proving most of his fans wrong, he struck out before confirming the double-digit haul.
The captain’s poor form will definitely cause some headaches for the IPL franchises. The right-handed batsman has only a few games left before being eliminated from the tournament. According to reports, the local T20 tournament will continue till March 6. With less than two weeks left, the Mumbai-born player will need to improve his form before joining the Punjab Kings camp ahead of the IPL 2026 season.

Iyer was with Team India before T20 World Cup 2026
Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, when Team India was struggling with several injuries, Shreyas Iyer replaced Tilak Verma, who had to undergo surgery. The 31-year-old was named for the 5-match T20I bilateral series against New Zealand but did not get any chance to play for the Men in Blue.
There were rumors that Iyer could also be included in the T20 World Cup 2026 squad to replace the injured Tilak Verma. However, Verma got match fitness within the stipulated time limit.
Despite an injury to top-order batsman Ishan Kishan, Iyer remained on the bench during the India vs New Zealand T20I series. Former Indian cricketer and now cricket expert Aakash Chopra criticized the Indian team management for not giving Iyer any chance to showcase his talent against the Kiwis.
Aakash Chopra criticized the Indian team management for not giving Iyer a chance in the playing eleven against New Zealand.
Chorpa said on his YouTube channel, “My biggest issue is why have you kept Shreyas Iyer in the team? When Tilak Verma got injured, I was the one who said that Shreyas should not be played because his name is not in the World Cup squad. However, when Ishan Kishan got injured, you did not have any other batsman sitting out.”
Iyer’s next major assignment will be during the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League, where he will again serve as their leader for the Punjab Kings. Under his captaincy, PBKS reached the final of IPL 2025, but lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore.
