Shreyas Iyer’s first innings as India’s full-time T20I captain ended in disappointment as Ireland defeated the world champions by 34 runs in the opening T20I in Belfast on Friday.
The defeat not only gave Ireland its first international win over India, but also added Shreyas Iyer to the unwanted list of some of the biggest names in Indian cricket. The right-handed batsman became the fourth Indian captain to lose his first T20 match as captain, joining Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill.
The result has also reignited the debate over India’s decision to move on from Suryakumar Yadav, despite the Mumbai batsman leading the team to unprecedented success in the shortest format.
Ireland made a bad start to Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy
It was a historic evening for Ireland and an evening to forget for India. When invited to bat first, Ireland recovered from a poor start and scored 182/9 in 20 overs. Captain Lorcan Tucker led the fight with a good half-century, while Gareth Delany missed a half-century with a crucial inning of 49 runs.
India had a chance to restrict the host team to a low score but failed to take advantage of it in the middle overs. Harshit Rana was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/24, while Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel took two wickets each.
In reply, India were given a brilliant start by Abhishek Sharma, who scored 49 runs in just 20 balls. However, after the departure of the opener, Ireland took complete control of the contest.
The Indian middle order had to struggle against the disciplined bowling of the host team. Debutants Matt Hollard and Jai Mundhra played key roles as wickets kept falling at regular intervals.
India slipped badly from 80/3 and were eventually bowled out for 148 in 18.5 overs, 34 runs short of the target. The defeat ensured that Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy journey started on the wrong foot despite coming in as one of India’s most experienced T20 batsmen.
Shreyas Iyer joins unwanted India captaincy list
The defeat in Belfast created an unwanted record for the newly appointed captain. Shreyas Iyer became the fourth Indian captain to lose his first T20 match. Before him, only Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill had to face defeat in their captaincy debut match in this format.
Most of the Indian captains have enjoyed winning starts. Virender Sehwag, Suresh Raina, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Suryakumar Yadav all won their first T20 matches as captain.
At the age of 31 years and 202 days, Shreyas Iyer became the third oldest Indian captain behind Shikhar Dhawan and Suryakumar Yadav at the time of his T20I captaincy debut. He came into the role with more T20I experience than any Indian captain before him.
He had already played 114 T20Is before captaining India, surpassing Rohit Sharma’s previous record of 80 matches before his first match as captain. Virat Kohli (72), KL Rahul (42), Rishabh Pant (30) and Dhawan (21) are behind him in this list.
Those figures highlighted the selectors’ faith in Iyer’s experience, making the defeat even more disappointing from India’s perspective.
Did India move on from Suryakumar Yadav too early?
The result has inevitably sparked fresh discussions over a change in India’s captaincy. Suryakumar Yadav’s record as T20I captain is one of India’s best ever. Under his leadership, India won 42 of their 52 matches and never lost a T20I series or tournament.
More importantly, India won the 2025 Asia Cup and the 2026 T20 World Cup during his tenure and established themselves as the dominant power in world cricket.
Despite those achievements, the selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir chose a new direction after the World Cup victory and handed over leadership responsibilities to Iyer.
A captain should not be defined by one defeat, especially in his very first match. However, the timing of the loss has naturally intensified scrutiny on the decision.
Iyer remains one of India’s most proficient white-ball batsmen and will have an immediate opportunity to respond in the second T20I against Ireland. However, his first day as India’s full-time T20I captain has resulted in a place on the unwanted list along with Kohli, Pant and Gill.
