Many might have been surprised when the national selection committee announced Shreyas Iyer as the captain of India’s T20I team in place of Suryakumar Yadav, but Iyer himself was not.
As he knew this was bound to happen at some point in his career. And it actually happened: Shreyas Iyer, who led three different teams to the finals in the Indian Premier League, was chosen as the captain of the national cricket team for the shortest format of the game.

Shreyas Iyer expressed his views on being appointed captain of the national team
Ahead of India’s first match against England in the ongoing tour of the United Kingdom, the team’s newly appointed captain expressed his feelings when the selectors announced his name as the next leader of the Men in Blue.
He was not really surprised, as he had kept his faith in his hard work and past achievements in the Indian Premier League and domestic cricket.
Whenever Shreyas Iyer represented India in all formats, he tried to play positively. Therefore, he had a strong feeling that at some stage of his career, his hard work would definitely bear fruit.

“To be honest, it is not strange. I was expecting it at some point of time. I have performed brilliantly in the previous IPL tournaments whenever I have represented the country. So, it is not a surprise for me.”
“But, at the same time, I think it’s a great opportunity for me to learn from everyone who has been a part of the T20 World Cup-winning team, the team management, the support staff and some of the individuals who have played,” Shreyas Iyer told BCCI.TV ahead of the first T20I of the five-match series between India vs England.
On getting the captaincy of India, Shreyas Iyer said, “I think this is icing on the cake.”
It is a dream for every aspiring cricketer to represent the country at the highest level of the game. Shreyas Iyer is like every other talented player who used to have the same dream. Now, leading the national cricket team is like icing on the cake.
He said in the same video, “As a child, you always dreamed of playing for the Indian team. Now, you are leading the Indian team. I think this is the icing on the cake. It means the world. It is definitely a result of the hard work you have done and the support you have received from fans, family and friends.”
Team India needs a comeback against England
India will play England in the series opener at Chester-le-Street. Before the match, the captain said that the extra pressure will motivate him to perform better than before. The Indian cricket team will begin a high-profile series after a shocking 0-2 series defeat against Ireland.
As the full captain of the Indian cricket team, Iyer is yet to register his first win. Along with leading the team, he will also have to focus on his batting, as Suryakumar Yadav was dropped due to poor batting form.
