Shreyas Iyer gives big update on his injury ahead of South Africa ODI

Team India’s middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer has given an update on his injury ahead of the three-match ODI series against South Africa starting on November 30 at home. The right-handed batsman has started rehabilitation and shared a picture of himself returning to the gym on his Instagram handle on Tuesday.

Iyer is recovering from a serious spleen injury suffered during the recent ODI series in Australia. He was ruled out of the upcoming home ODIs against South Africa, where he was expected to lead the team in the absence of Shubman Gill. After the Test series, the Men in Blue will play an ODI series against South Africa.

Shreyas Iyer was injured during the ODI series against Australia.

Shreyas Iyer landed awkwardly and injured his stomach while attempting a difficult catch in the deep during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. The impact ruptured the spleen and caused internal bleeding.

The BCCI medical team took him to the hospital. Doctors confirmed internal bleeding, and Iyer had to undergo a procedure to stop the bleeding. He remained under observation for a week before being discharged. The batsman stayed in Australia for a short time to continue his recovery.

The Mumbai batsman finally returned home on 16 November. During his rehabilitation, Iyer made a public appearance at the birthday celebrations of Punjab Kings (PBKS) all-rounder Shashank Singh. He was seen smiling in pictures shared by PBKS co-owner Preity Zinta.

Before his injury, Iyer had featured in the ODI series against Australia, where India lost 1–2. He scored 11 runs in the first match but bounced back with 61 runs in the second game. He did not get a chance to bat in the final ODI, which India won easily.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli led the chase brilliantly in that third match, scoring unbeaten innings of 121 and 74 respectively, leading India to a nine-wicket win.

Shreyas Iyer is expected to be unavailable for the next few months as he continues to recover from his injury. He will not be a part of India’s upcoming three-match home ODI series against South Africa.

India will also be without their regular ODI captain Shubman Gill, who has been ruled out with a neck injury. With both the senior leaders missing, the selectors have handed over the captaincy responsibility to KL Rahul, who will lead the team for the entire ODI series.

The ODI leg of the tour will begin on November 30 at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. The second match will be played in Raipur on 3rd December and the third ODI will be played in Visakhapatnam on 6th December.

After the ODI series, both the teams will focus their attention on the T20 format. The five-match T20 series will start from December 9 in Cuttack.
