Shreyas Iyer explains Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s decision to delay his India debut

The India national cricket team will take on the England national cricket team at the Banks Homes Riverside, Durham on Wednesday. Shreyas Iyer’s team will play a five-match T20 series with the Three Lions; Earlier, they suffered a heavy defeat against Ireland, losing the series 2–0 for the first time, which was a tough start to Iyer’s captaincy tenure.

Team India will try to win the series after recovering from the shocking series defeat in England. Ahead of the first T20 match against England, captain Shreyas Iyer is holding a pre-match press conference, where he has answered the most talked about question that why Vaibhav Suryavanshi did not play in the series against Ireland despite his current form.

“It’s not that only one person has performed well” – Shreyas Iyer supports India’s batsmen despite poor performance

Shreyas Iyer was asked how challenging it is to handle a player like Vaibhav Suryavanshi sitting on the bench? He replied that all the players playing in Ireland have performed well in the last T20 World Cup 2026 and the team management is giving opportunities and a sense of security to every player.

“Look, all the players in the team have performed well. It is not that only one person has performed well. But we have to create an environment of opportunity and security so that everyone gets confidence to move ahead in the tournament,” Iyer said.

“And having won the last World Cup, they definitely know how to play T20 cricket. They have been the main pillars of that format consistently. So, it is very important to support them.”

Shreyas gave an official update on whether Vaibhav Suryavanshi will play in the England series or not. He was also seen batting for long periods in Ireland and Durham before the match.

“Our hands are tied,” Shreyas said. “It’s very personal. We can’t tell everyone what combination we are going to play with because the opponents will also know. He is a brilliantly talented player and will perform brilliantly whenever he gets a chance to play.”
