Recently in a development, Team India’s middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer is not in controversy for the upcoming two-match Test series against the West Indies at home. In particular, Iyer urged the Control Board for Cricket in India (BCCI) to urge the red-ball cricket to take a break due to workload and injury concerns.
Iyer struggled with recurring issues including surgery in 2023, which has expressed concern about his long -term fitness. The batsman has continued to play after the 2023 Asia Cup. He has opted for a break from tests and first -class cricket and is expected to be available for selection in other formats.

According to The Telegraph India, Shreyas Iyer is taking a temporary break from Red-Ball cricket to focus on re-achieving his fitness. Iyer will work on his rehabilitation before deciding on his future in long formats.
“It turns out that Shreyas is taking only one break and will work hard on his fitness to rejuvenate his red ball career and then call a call in the coming months. He did a back surgery in April 2023 and first felt inconvenienced during the Dollip Trophy at the beginning of this month.”

Shreyas Iyer recently withdrew from another informal test against Australia A. He decided to take a break as he appears to manage his charge and focus on his fitness.
This decision may also affect his participation in the upcoming Ranji Trophy season for Mumbai. After Ajinkya Rahane stepped down from the role, Iyer first asked Mumbai selectors not to consider Ranji’s captaincy.
Earlier in the series, Iyer led India to A in the first informal test in Lucknow, but scored just eight runs in his only innings, ending the match draw. The two-match test series against the West Indies begins in Ahmedabad on 2 October.

Shreyas Iyer has been a major middle-order batsman in formats for India. He has played 14 Test matches, scoring an average of 811 runs at 36.86, including a century and five fifties, with the first 105 highest score against New Zealand in 2021.
Iyer has depicted in 70 ODI games, with 2,845 runs at an average of 48.22 and a strike rate of 100.00 with five centuries and 22 fifty. He was also part of India’s winning 2025 Champions Trophy team under Rohit Sharma.
Mumbai Batter has played 51 T20I matches since its debut against New Zealand in November 2017. He has scored 1,104 runs at a strike rate of 30.66 and 136.12 on an average, including eight fifties. The batsman was not included in the team for the ongoing Asia Cup 2025.
