Veteran IPL Pesar Sandeep Sharma recently replaced Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I captain of India about the speculation around Shreyas Iyer. Sandeep said that leading a franchise in the IPL final should not be the test to captain the national cricket team, calling the debate insensitive.
Shreyas Iyer directed the Punjab Kings (PBK) in his first final in more than a decade. He scored 604 runs in 17 innings at an average of more than 50 and a strike rate of 175. Iyer was the sixth highest scorer in the tournament. Some former cricketers have urged the BCCI to test their leadership skills in international cricket.

Talking to CricketRacker, Sandeep Sharma said that the franchise leadership is not a benchmark for international captaincy. He told that Suryakumar Yadav does not do the captain in the IPL and called the discussion on Shreyas Iyer “insensitive”.

“Look, it is a debate that he (Iyer), as a captain, took his team to the finals, he is insensitive. Surya is not captaining any franchise. So it is not a test to become the captain of the Indian side.Sandeep said,
“And for the last three years, Rohit was not captaining any franchise. But still, he was the captain of the T20 Indian team, and is still the same captain in favor of a day. And he was the captain of all three tests. So there is no criterion for what you do in the IPL,” he said.

Sandeep Sharma said that captaining an IPL side and leading India is two very different responsibilities. He said that while franchise cricket involves guiding a mixture of domestic and foreign players, international cricket requires the management of a selected squad at the highest level.
Sharma said, “Just like BCCI has its own domestic league, okay?
“Here in the IPL, you have a lot of domestic players, a lot of young players. Some of them come from abroad. But here you are choosing someone who will manage 15 people better here.”
“So this debate, I feel insensitive what he is doing in the IPL. These two teams are completely different teams. The Indian team is a completely different team. IPL team is a completely different team. So I think people need to learn and people need to understand this before commenting.”

Shreyas Iyer has directed three different franchises in the IPL final. He first took Delhi Capital to his first final in 2020 and later helped Kolkata Knight Riders win the 2024 championship.
In particular, he was not included in the Indian team for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, which was scheduled to begin on 9 September in the UAE. He was also not considered among the five standby players for the tournament.
The right -handed batsman has scored an average of 30.67 in 51 T20I and has a strike rate of 136.13, including eight half -centuries with the best score of 74. He last played T20I against Australia in Bangalore in December 2023, scoring 53 runs off 37 balls in India’s six-rin win.
